INTRODUCTION

Below is a collection of some of my favourite Bird photographs I have taken over time when hubby I could travel freely about our State of Victoria, and also during Melbourne – Australia’s COVID-19 lockdown – where photography was restricted to our home environment.  Some were taken with my Sony long lens, some with my Sony Macro lens and others with my Mobile Phone.

CONCLUSION

Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and while at the same time be creative, and especially in times such as these during COVID-19 Lockdowns…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure became a family affair with my daughter, granddaughter and hubby visiting the Werribee River, Werribee South, Victoria – Australia.  We stopped at K Road where local bird photographs had been photographing a rare sighting of an Eastern Osprey.  Fortunately, we were able to photograph her as well!  The Eastern Osprey was perched on a tree limb while she pecked away at a fish she had just caught that morning from the Werribee River below her tree location.  It took two visits to this location to sight enough birds to feel I had enough to blog about.  I managed to photograph a Little Pied Cormorant, Pacific Black Ducks, Australian White Ibis, Crested Pigeon, White Faced Heron, Royal Spoonbill, Common Starling, and a pair of Red-rumped Parrots.  We enjoyed both visits to this location and value the fact this natural resource is just an hour from home!

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens, and a Sigma150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM with a Sigma Mount Converter MC-11. For some of these photographs I used the camera hand-held but for most of the shots, I used a Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them, I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.   Please find both above and below, the best of what I took during this photography adventure!

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul.  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

INTRODUCTION

Early one morning, hubby and I decided to take a drive to Spavin Drive Lake in Sunbury, Victoria – Australia.  A location that is not too far from home and an easy drive for us as well.  Here we spent a couple of hours photographing local bird wildlife while enjoying the early morning sunshine.  Spavin Drive Lake was originally made to provide water to the historic Rupertswood Mansion.  Now it’s a diverse habitat for varying water birds and a popular fishing spot for local residents. I was able to photograph Greylag Geese, Pacific Black Ducks, Australian White Ibis, Crested Pigeons, Common Indian Miners, Eurasian Coots, Orange-bellied Parrots, and Yellow Throated Miners while feeding their babies.  It was a pleasant morning’s photography adventure and at its end, we only had a short drive back home – good for us oldies!

Photography 2019 – Birds: “Westmeadows – Sulphur Crested Cockatoo” Written and Photographed by Karen Robinson

INTRODUCTION

On this photography adventure day, we only had to take a 5 minute drive from home!  Beside one of Westmeadows, Victoria – Australia local backstreets there stands a tall old gumtree with a large hollow.  At this location each year, around November, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos come and nest at what is perhaps an unusual location.  Cars and people busily pass by daily under their nest, but they seem to have adapted to the suburban lifestyle.  I cannot help feel sad for our bird wildlife.  Melbourne’s ever emerging urban sprawl means that tree felling of large areas of land is therefore – stripping large areas of bird habitats.  Thus leaving birds to find unusual locations to subsist or not at all – hence bird numbers dwindling.  So I hope in years to come to continue to find these iconic Australian native birds revisit this old gum tree…

Above Photograph Story:  During my time photographing the Giraffes – I noticed this one staring into the far distance.  It had stepped up into a patch of dirt surrounded by large rocks positioned as the highest point within its territory. From here it craned its neck towards the view.  I couldn’t help ponder “what must it be thinking?”.  This elegant Giraffe appeared forlorn as it studied the far distant terrain over tall green tree tops and towards the clouded blue skies’.  As I stood there observing, I suddenly found myself feeling sad for this beautiful long-legged, long-necked creature…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia.  It had been decades since our last visit and probably with our own children when they where small. We spent a morning there with the intention of returning many more times during 2019.  I decided to concentrate my photography efforts on just the Giraffes.  As the Zebras lived with the Giraffes they too were photographed.  I also managed to photograph some noisy colourful Rainbow Lorikeets while they feed at the Zoo’s bird feeders, and a Bell Miner more commonly know as Bellbird because of their beautiful call.  Making the decision to restrict myself to just a couple of zoo animals and birds gave me the opportunity to better capture their features — their essence I feel.  We enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning soon…

INTRODUCTION

The Victoria State Rose Garden Werribee, Victoria – Australia proved to be a lovely photography adventure for hubby and I.  Not far from where we live, and not too difficult to get around – with lots of beautiful blooming roses to view with they delightful scent to appreciate.  It took two different visits to capture this selection of photographs.  The first time we came a number of weeks before the opening show, and the second time, on the actual weekend opening, where we found most of the roses in full bloom!  The Rose Garden has been in existence for 25 years. During that time it has been awarded the ‘Garden of Excellence’ which is easy to see why when strolling through its maze of rose garden beds. There are more than 5000 roses in the garden and approximately 600 rose varieties. Upon our departure and just outside the rose garden, we also spotted Masked Lapwing birds also known as Spur-winged Plovers stalking across green lawns, looking for embedded insects; and Red Wattle-birds high up in beautiful Silky Oak trees feeding on its bright yellow/orange flowers.

INTRODUCTION

On this photography adventure day, my hubby and I were accompanied by our daughter and grand-daughter at Woodlands Historical Park, Greenvale, Victoria – Australia.  This woodland is a short distance from home and most convenient to both our families.  Here we managed to take photographs of a number of Jacky Dragon Lizards that we had spotted on old dead tree logs.  Martin Tree Swallows swooped above our heads from tree to tree, they were hard to photograph due to their speed but I managed to capture one shot where a parent landed on the end of a hollow in the gum tree where a pair of swallows were nesting.  Laughing Kookaburra’s iconic bird calls alerted us to their present and I was able to spot one high up in one of the many gum trees.  Also managed to photograph an Australian Magpie with food in its peak.  There were also numerous Kangaroos in mobs throughout the woodlands, mostly lazily resting during the warmer part of the day which allowed us to get close enough to photograph without disturbing them.  We had a lovely time with our daughter and grand-daughter while spending time with nature…

INTRODUCTION

One overcast morning, hubby and I set out for another photography adventure!  Our destination this time was the Organ Pipes National Park, Bulla – Australia.  The spring weather gave us conditions just right for a pleasant bush walking experience.  The Organ Pipes formation, the Rosette Rock, and the Tessellated Pavement sites proved to be interesting and great spots to stop and take some time out to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.

Varying birds could be heard and seen alongside of the Jacksons River which gently meandered through the reserve.  We spotted and I manage to photograph:- tiny Superb Fairy-wrens that bounced around the lower bushes and ground coverage; high up in riverside gum trees, Masked Wood-swallows called out to their partners; a young Fantail Cuckoo rested on a bare tree branch, overseeing his territory; a White-plumed Honeyeater hung upside-down from the bow of a gumtree while pecking at the bark, searching for insects; black and white Willy Wagtails darted from one tree to another in the process of protecting their nest from would-be intruders; a Dusky Wood-swallow perched on a dead branch as it stared at us with mild interest; an elegant White-faced Heron stood tall on a river gum tree limb, scanning the waters for a fish feed; a beautiful Tawny Frogmouth Owl slept wedged within the bow of a gumtree; a Black Swamp Wallaby busily munched on a small native bush while we quietly observed; and a mother Kangaroo lazily lay across a patch of short grass while her joey rested beside her, during the hottest part of the day.

All these sights and sounds combined with fresh air and the warmth of the sun was just wonderful and reminded us both about how fortunate we are to still be able to do this together.
