INTRODUCTION

This week Craigieburn Camera Club conducted its October Zoom Club Photography meeting to present the October 2020 Photographic Competition “Monochrome” results. In the Intermediate Section, I received a Merit Award for the above photograph and a Highly Commended Award for the below.

was thrilled to have received these Awards and thankful to the club for working out a way to continue on with these events despite the limitations we all facing currently because of COVID-19 restrictions.

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul. But over the past months – these adventures have been put on hold and/or restricted due to COVID-19 pandemic. With Government announcements this week it looks like we in Victoria, Australia could be experiencing more freedom soon.

INTRODUCTION

We are living in a strange time in history.  The coronavirus has, is and will continue to influence how we go about our daily lives for some time to come!  For hubby and me, its only a matter of staying at home until otherwise advised except for medical needs, food requirements and daily walks around our neighbourhood.  We know we are fortunate but at highrisk being over the age of 65 years of age now – so no photography adventures outside our garden and house until further notice from our Australian government.

Our Craigieburn Camera Club has been helping us photographers stay active by giving us a weekly task to achieve.  This week we had to find a photograph from our archives and see if we could make improvements, or find one we may have overlooked and develop.  As I was scrolling through my Lightroom Classic Catalogue I came across the above photograph which I had overlooked back in 2018. The colourful autumn garden scene brought back many memories about my our photography adventures around Mount Macedon and we hope to return one day soon to reappreciate its stunning beauty.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography adventure – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens. Also used a Right Angle L Plate Bracket for my camera so that I could turn it to do portraits or landscape photographs more easily which worked a treat.  I use a BH-40 Ballhead for my tripod which helps make taking my photographs not just easier but much more enjoyable. During these photography adventures, I use an Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and to ensure I gain GPS location readings.

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul. But over the months to come – these adventures will need to be put on hold.  It will be a time to discover home photography – perhaps Macro!  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

INTRODUCTION

This week Craigieburn Camera Club conducted its first Zoom Club Photography meeting to present the April Photographic Open Competition 2020.  In the Intermediate Section, I received a Merit Award for the above photograph. Judge Paul Robinson (NB:  No relation to me) was the independent judge for said and this is what he had to say about my above photograph of High Camp, Victoria – Australia ‘Granite Boulder Region‘ taken on a beautiful early morning around sunrise.

The judges comments:  You have captured the mood of a crisp summer dawn commencing its glitter on the grasslands with a deal of sensitivity. The warm coloured sky and the grasslands are harmoniously in colour balance where one can sense the oncoming heat of the day.It has the look of a classic Australian landscape particularly from the Australian Heidelberg School of painters (aka Australian impressionists) as well as some of the early colonial painters such as John Glover in Tasmania. It is worthwhile to continue to explore this kind of domesticated landscape which has not been pursued much since the advent of digital photography.

INTRODUCTION

On our way back home from our recent Craigieburn Camera Club photography adventure visit to Studley Park – Kew, Victoria – Australia, we stopped off at one of the Flying-Fox Viewing Platforms alongside the Yarra River, Yarra Bank Park. Here I managed to photograph some of the roosting Grey Headed Flying-Foxes high up in river gums within their colonies. We spent some time at the platform waiting for better light and to spot moments where they stretched out their wings to let in the warm sunshine. It wasn’t until I got back home and took a close look at these photographs them that I realised just how beautiful Flying-Foxes are!

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography adventure – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens and a Sigma150-600mm F5-6.3 DGOS HSM with a Sigma Mount Converter MC-11. For some of these photographs, I used the camera hand-held but for most of the shots, I used a Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base. I had purchased a Right Angle L Plate Bracket for my camera so that I could turn it to do portraits or landscape photographs more easily which worked a treat.  I also purchased a BH-40 Ballhead for my tripod and once more, it made taking my photographs not just easier but much more enjoyable. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure with the Craigieburn Camera Club had members venturing out early on a Saturday morning to meet up for coffee, engage in conversations about photography and just enjoying the company of like-minded photographers.  Studley Park in Kew, Victoria – Australia was the chosen location which is situated along and around the Yarra River.  Even though the weather was cold and there was some rain, the early morning offered some good photographic opportunities for all. I managed to take these photographs of Kane’s Bridge, a pedestrian single-span suspension bridge, and of some boats moored beside the Boathouse.

INTRODUCTION

It was a true privilege to join some of my fellow Craigieburn Camera Club Members at this year’s Craigieburn ANZAC Ceremony at the Craigieburn Garden of Remembrance.  We were invited by Kevin O’Callaghan (President of the Craigieburn War Memorial & Remembrance Committee Inc) to take photographs of the event for their members and families. The early morning was beautiful for an Autumn day, no rain or wind which meant we could all stand outdoors without fear of bad weather.  The mood of the crowd respectful and serious as they took time to remember those who served in the defence of their country.  As I developed this range of photographs, I took note of the solemn looks on the faces of some of the men and women who proudly wore war medals of great merit.  And others huddled in small groups to share the company of those who understood, understood what it meant to go to war, to come home again, to leave behind so many – to remember…

INTRODUCTION

Another photography adventure day with the Craigieburn Camera Club!  Hubby and I with other club members went about fulfilling the required photography task which was to find a composition to photograph that was inclusive of the following: music, reflections, people, angles and movement.  Federation Square, Melbourne – Australia was the Club’s choice of locations. Due to the fact it was a weekend and lots of community events where underway while we were there – it wasn’t hard to find things to photograph, but being creative demanded extra attention from us as photographers.  It was also hot which made it even more challenging!  But our afternoon finished up with us all joining up together to have dinner at one of Federation Square’s Cafes.  Here we got to cool down with a much-needed cold drink, exchange stories about our experiences during the afternoon and just enjoy each others company.  It was a great way to end the day…

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens. INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure back in May this year involved visiting the Docklands Waterfront, city of Melbourne, Victoria – Australia with the Craigieburn Camera Club. Our goal was to gain a better understanding and experience of night photography.  It was a lovely evening, not too cold and a sprinkle of rain had wet the pavement surfaces just enough to help reflect colourful neon lighting which shone from surrounding city buildings.  Strolling through the city’s water’s edge during the night in a group felt most safe, and such a pleasure to be able to take night photographs without worrying about our safety…

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this cityscape photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For these photographs I used the camera mounted on a tripod with a remote and my camera settings involved using a low ISO with a slow shutter speed. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

INTRODUCTION

A beautiful day at Woodlands Historic Park, Victoria – Australia which is located just a short distance from my home.  Hubby and I with other members of the Craigieburn Camera Club engaged in a ‘free format photograph shot’ where we wandered around this nature preserve taking photographs that were of interest to the individual photographer.  We experienced glimpses of landscapes and wildlife seen by European settlers in the 1840’s (Park Victoria 2018).  A 150-year old homestead stands on the property; indigenous canoe trees, native woodland and grassland are all part of the reserve’s offering.  A fenced ‘Back Paddock’ is where we spotted mobs of kangaroos and numerous native birds (Park Victoria 2018).  It was a very pleasant experience, and we finished up having coffee and scones at the Historic Homestead.  Returning home involved just a few minutes drive which was a lovely change for us!

During this landscape photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For all these photographs I used the camera mounted on a tripod with a remote timer.  I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure was all about attending the 64th Convention & Inter-Club Exhibition 2018 at Warrnambool, Victoria – Australia.  My hubby and I drove there – taking about four hours by car to join up with other Craigieburn Club Members at a rental house just outside of Warrnambool.  The convention which is run by VAP’s (Victorian Association of Photographic Societies) had over 220 delegates plus – in attend over three days.  Our club, the Craigieburn Camera Club had submitted the required 15 prints per club from members.  I had been fortunate enough to have had one selected for the club.  It was a photograph I took back in January 2017 of farmland in Mickleham, Victoria – Australia.  January is usually a dry time of the year, and with the sunset looming behind the clouds, the fields yielded a beautiful golden colour, which posed a lovely contrast to the ominous clouds to the left, and a pretty blue sky to the right.  My photograph of this landscape rated 12 out of 15 which was the highest rating within the Craigieburn Camera Club set of prints submitted at the convention.  This made my hubby and I happy and it was such a pleasant surprise.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this landscape photography of the Mickleham Farmland, I used an old camera which since then I have had to replace.  It was a Canon EOS 1100D with a EF-S18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 lens.  The capture time was 6.29pm on the 31 Jan 2017.  Exposure 1/200 sec at F/8.0, focal length 27mm with an ISO speed rating of 100.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

On my return home, I always download all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.  I developed a small selection of photographs This process helps to establish what I need to work on to ensure my photography skills improve overtime.

CONCLUSION

It was a great trip to Warrnambool, spending time with other club members, having the opportunity to experience what others are doing in the world of photography.  We came away knowing that this is the right interest for us now at this time of our lives, as it gives us much pleasure getting out-and-about looking for and enjoying photography adventures …

Happy photography all!…

INTRODUCTION

At 6am on April 25th 2018, hubby and I attended the ‘ANZAC Dawn Service’ at Craigieburn ANZAC Park, Victoria – Australia.  For the last three years Craigieburn Camera Club members have assisted by taking photos which are donated to the RSL to share with the community. Many local community members were there alongside of those who had/have families gave/give their service to their country – Lest we forget. It was a moving service, and a privilege to be able to contribute in some way by taking photographs.  Please find here below some of the best I took that morning.

I found this poem on the Australian Memorial Website.  It was written by an eleven year-old boy…

Lest we forget

“The time has come” an Australian said,
“Bye” as he faced the door and ran ahead.
The war has started the battle begun,
Smack,boom,crash went the lethal gun.
Oww, the pain, other soldiers cried,
Most of their friends sadly died.
All the solders tried to laugh in glee,
But they all missed their family.
Every battle the bugle sang,
The soldiers heard the deafening bang.
Soon the battle is going to end,
The pain inside will never mend.
How they wished to be back home,
Safe and snug and not alone,
More and more people die,
As more soldiers painfully cry.
When it’s the end of war,
They knock happily at their door,

Soldiers go to Flanders field,
With the poppies they wield,
People look at the poppies red,
Like their blood on the graveyards head,
We remember the soldiers, who fought and died.
And all their mates fighting by their side.
We thank the soldiers who kept us alive,
And the times in war they had to survive,
We will always remember the men,
Who gave their life to defend.

Lest we forget.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this early morning photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lense. For all of the shots, I used a tripod thus ensuring I could use a slow shutter speed on my camera. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.   Please find both above and below, the best of what I took during this photography adventure!

CONCLUSION

Photography is just another way I choose to improve my sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!  On this occasion, I came away thinking that I had been able to do some good for someone else by recording the event photographically – and that felt good.

Happy photography all!

INTRODUCTION

Another photography adventure day with the Craigieburn Camera Club!  Hubby and I with other club members, got to visit and photograph, amazing ‘Australian raptors and owl bird flight displays’ at the Full Flight Birds of Prey Centre – which is located within Miners Rest, Victoria – Australia.  The centre’s staff are “dedicated to the protection and conservation of native raptors through public education, breeding and research”.  It was a glorious autumn day which meant we were able to truly enjoy our time photographing these beautiful creatures. On our way back home, my hubby and I stopped at one of the small country town cafes for a light lunch and coffee.  A good day was had by all…

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

This type of photography was certainly a challenge for me but after doing some research on suitable camera settings, I was able to take some photographs that I was happy with and that also help tell a story.

During this bird photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lense. For all of the shots, I hand-held my camera, ensuring I had the image stabilisation turned on. The camera settings I decided to use were as following:  Manual Mode: 1/1000 sec shutter speed at f/7.1; set auto ISO; continuous auto focus; and selected centre point.  I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

INTRODUCTION

The Craigieburn Camera Club ran a workshop on Macro photography with Bob Winers at the Living Legends Homestead, Greenvale, Victoria – Australia.  Not having a macro lens myself, I used what I had and took closeup photographs instead. There was a lovely small garden featured beside the homestead and this is where I put all my efforts into taking closeups of different varieties of flowers.  Afterwards my hubby and I enjoyed a lovely cup of coffee, and some freshly made scones at the homestead.  It was a beautiful day to be out-and-about in favourable autumn temperatures…a good “to be alive” day for sure!

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this garden photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For all these photographs I used the camera mounted on a tripod with a remote timer.  I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

INTRODUCTION

The Craigieburn Camera Club organised an outing to this event to give club members an opportunity to photograph an array of vehicles at Craigieburn Central, Victoria – Australia. Jess – the model came dressed in her best Rockabilly gear to pose for the club with the cars, bikes and trucks.  It was a challenge for me as I had not photographed at such an event before.  Trying to navigate around moving people and vehicles, posed some difficulty at times.  The day was very overcast which also presented another thing to consider!  But I was rewarded for my photography efforts I feel…
