INTRODUCTION

Out-and-about doing another photography adventure!  So appreciative that we are able to do now because some of the COVID 19 social distancing requirements have been revised.  Hubby wanted to do some fishing and this combined with my need to photograph landscape had us deciding on revisiting another part of the beautiful Goulburn River near Gilmore Bridge on the Goulburn Valley Highway, Thornton, Victoria – Australia.  While hubby fished I spent a good period of time standing on the bridge that overlooked the river.  Here I managed to capture images of early morning misty conditions across the river.  As the mist lifted, it revealed a beautiful river setting.  Later that morning I followed my hubby up the river to take more images during the midmorning sunlight.  It was truly beautiful, scenic and spiritually uplifting.  So worth getting up at 3.30am to be on site for the sunrise!

Black and White image of the Goulburn River taken from the Gilmore Bridge at Thornton. I stood on the side of the bridge safely for two hours taking a series of photographs as the sun rose and as the mist lifted during that period of time. A beautiful mystical Autumn morning.

A misty muted coloured image of the Goulburn River taken from the Gilmore Bridge at Thornton. I took this image looking in the opposite direction from the bridge.  It was ghostly and beautiful at the same time. The autumn colours of the riverside trees were still evident through the mist and the river’s soft blue simmering colour helps tell us it was very cold!

  • Focal Length 24mm
  • ISO 100
  • Camera Make Sony
  • Model ILCE-7M2
  • Lens FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3OSS

This sunrise image of the Goulburn River taken from the Gilmore Bridge at Thornton. I took this image nearly two hours later.  By then most of the mist had lifted and the sun was rising on the left and shining across onto the right-hand side of the riverbank.  Its rays of yellow light warming up the scene beautifully!

  • Focal Length 38mm
  • ISO 100
  • Camera Make Sony
  • Model ILCE-7M2
  • Lens FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3OSS

Here I managed to capture an image of hubby fishing as the sun rose up and over the trees onto the righthand side riverbank, casting shadows across its stone bank.

NO. 5 PHOTO CAMERA SETTINGS – for the above photograph

  • Exposure 1/90 sec at f/13
  • Focal Length 54mm
  • ISO 100
  • Camera Make Sony

This image above was taken further along the Goulburn River at Thornton. I took this image of my hubby fishing. It was later in the morning by then and the lighting along the left side of the stoned river bank helped to illuminate tall river gums.

CONCLUSION

Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative. Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits is a real privilege for sure. It really does rejuvenate the body and soul.

INTRODUCTION

This week Craigieburn Camera Club conducted its first Zoom Club Photography meeting to present the April Photographic Open Competition 2020.  In the Intermediate Section, I received a Merit Award for the above photograph. Judge Paul Robinson (NB:  No relation to me) was the independent judge for said and this is what he had to say about my above photograph of High Camp, Victoria – Australia ‘Granite Boulder Region‘ taken on a beautiful early morning around sunrise.

The judges comments:  You have captured the mood of a crisp summer dawn commencing its glitter on the grasslands with a deal of sensitivity. The warm coloured sky and the grasslands are harmoniously in colour balance where one can sense the oncoming heat of the day.It has the look of a classic Australian landscape particularly from the Australian Heidelberg School of painters (aka Australian impressionists) as well as some of the early colonial painters such as John Glover in Tasmania. It is worthwhile to continue to explore this kind of domesticated landscape which has not been pursued much since the advent of digital photography.

was thrilled to have received this award and thankful to the club for working out a way to continue on with these events despite the limitations we all facing currently.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography adventure back in December 2019 – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens. Also used a Right Angle L Plate Bracket for my camera so that I could turn it to do portraits or landscape photographs more easily which worked a treat.  I use a BH-40 Ballhead for my tripod which helps make taking my photographs not just easier but much more enjoyable. During these photography adventures, I use an Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and to ensure I gain GPS location readings.

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul. But over the months to come – these adventures will need to be put on hold.  It will be a time to discover home photography – perhaps Macro!  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!
