INTRODUCTION

The aim of this photography adventure was to capture landscape scenes around the Whittlesea and Mount Disappointment region, Victoria – Australia; a location not far from where we live.  My first visit to the Whittlesea region was with my daughter who loves to capture photos of small birds in the bush.  This can be most frustrating because they are so well hidden and take flight as soon as they sight a human stepping towards them.  My second visit on another day to the region was with my husband where we travelled along dusty, rocky roads within the Mount Disappointment State Forest.  Both occasions offered wonderful opportunities to take photographs of our local region but also gave me the opportunity to spend time with my husband and daughter – a win-win for me!

ABOUT WHITTLESEA AND MOUNT DISAPPOINTMENT REGION

“Before European settlement, the Aboriginal people of the Wurundjeri Wilam clan lived on the land that now forms the City of Whittlesea and the northern suburbs of Melbourne.  Many of the names in the City of Whittlesea were inspired by the Wurundjeri culture and traditions.  Place names that remain today include, Bundoora, Yan Yean, Mernda, Merri, Wallan and Wollert.  George Sherwin is recorded as the first European settler taking up land in 1837 (Whittlesea Historic Society Organisation 2017).”

“Nestled within the Great Dividing Range to the south-east of Broadford, the Mt Disappointment State Forest was a popular bush-walking, mountain-biking and horse-riding area prior to the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, when the region was extensively burnt.  By mid-2012 an extensive government-sponsored bushfire-recovery program had been implemented, including the rebuilding of visitor facilities and the reopening of campsites.  The regeneration of the forest is also well underway, aided by some wet winters following the bushfires (Explore Australia 2010)”.

INTRODUCTION

Once more my hubby and I packed up the photography equipment and headed out for the day! The aim of this photography adventure was to capture seascape scenes along the shoreline of Williamstown, Victoria – Australia.  The first visit was after sunrise, early to mid-morning and mostly around the Williamstown Pier where numerous boats and yachts were anchored within the safe harbour of Port Phillip Bay.  From this advantage point we could see Melbourne’s cityscape in the far background.  My second visit on another day was at a time where I could capture the ‘before and during’ sunrise views.  This time we located ourselves a little further alone from the Williamstown Pier; a location that gave us a clear view across the harbour and allowing us to see some of Melbourne’s cityscape with the Dandenong Ranges deep in the background.

ABOUT WILLIAMSTOWN – Today!

Williamstown is the oldest continuous settlement on the shores of Port Phillip and is an area rich in maritime history (Parks Victoria 2016).

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this seascape photography exercise and during my first visit to Williamstown, I used my EOS 1100D Canon DSLR camera on a tripod with a remote timer for the big shots.  The second visit – I used my new compact system camera a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a new lense Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS hand-held. It was the first time I had used this new camera and lense, but once I got the hang of it – it was such a pleasure to use.  I also used my Samsung Galaxy S6 mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom 6.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.  But considering it was my first time out using my new Sony Camera – I was pleasantly surprised with the results.  The Sony Camera was easy to use and made my old camera feel like a dinosaur in comparison.  Most of the photos required little adjustment out of the camera which was pleasing. But I did decide to turn some into black and white photographs that I had taken on my old camera in order to gain the best raw photographic details – using Lightroom 6.  Please find both above and below the best of what I took during these two days.

CONCLUSION

Being on location before sunrise and by the sea – was such a beautiful experience.  Watching the sun creep up and over the horizon, releasing its glorious colourful display of golden yellows and mellow oranges was visually breathtaking.  And the fresh salt sea air brushing across our faces made us feel good to be alive!  Thus using photography to improve my sense of wellbeing definitely works for me; we left in high spirits!

Happy photography all!

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this photography adventure was to capture amazing river and bush scenes within the Lerderderg State Forest Park.  It is a 14,250-hectare park located between Bacchus Marsh and Blackwood, an hour’s drive from Melbourne – Australia.  The Lerderderg river itself “has cut a 300 metre deep gorge through sandstone and slate, almost bisecting the park” (Parks Victoria 2016). To our surprise, the Lerderderg stony river bed was mostly dry with some occasional small water holes and lagoons to be found – as we ventured by foot along the expansive stony river bed.  My husband explained to me that some 50 years ago and when he was a young man, he would trek this area; and back then – there was no shortage of water flowing through this river’s watercourse way.  It was a shock to view this once mighty river so dry!  We will probably need to come back over winter and at the beginning of spring to see what difference the winter rains have made on this region of Australian bush.   The native wildlife surrounding the river greatly depend upon its water resources for daily sustenance, and this lack of water must mean that animal and bird wildlife would be suffering.  It is a beautiful region to visit; its isolation added to our overall experience, it was a magical day…

ABOUT LERDERDERG STATE FOREST

Lerderderg State Park encompasses scenic and geological gorge formations surrounding the Lerderderg River as well as the volcanic cone of Mount Blackwood.  The adjacent and separate block called the Pyrete Range forms part of the park.  The park is known for its remote setting and the 300 deep Lerderderg River gorge is a dominant feature.  Private land abuts the park to the south and the Wombat State forest abuts to the north and west (VEAC.Vic.Gov – 2017).

A range of vegetation types, including a riparian Blue Gum and Manna Gum community of State significance and 23 significant plant species present in Lerderderg State Park, together with nine significant animal species.  The vegetation changes dramatically from north to south in accordance with the rainfall gradient.  Dry Stringy-bark-box forests are found near the gorge mouth, and Box-Iron-bark woodlands along the high ridges of the south.  There is a change to taller, damper Messmate-Peppermint-Gum Forests along the northern boundary of the park.  The river margins support Blue Gum and Manna Gum, while grevilleas, wattles and hakeas are found in steep and rocky sections.  Late winter and spring are best times to see the spectacular display of wildflowers.  The Lerderderg River is a proclaimed Heritage River and there are 3 reference areas in the park (VEAC.Vic.Gov – 2017).

The Wurundjeri and the Wathaurung are Aboriginal tribes known to have lived in the area.  European occupation of the area commenced during the 1830s when squatters took up large pastoral runs around Bacchus Marsh.  Gold was first discovered at what is now the township of Blackwood, in 1851.  The area was rich in alluvial gold and large nuggets were found chiefly in the bed of the Lerderderg River and its tributaries in what is now the Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park (VEAC.Vic.Gov – 2017).

CONCLUSION

Another magical day taking landscape photographs.  I would encourage anyone to take up photography as a way of tapping into one’s creativeness; a way to reconnect with nature. Photography as an art form used as therapy – helps to improve one’s sense of well-being and gets a ‘thumbs up’ from me…

Happy photography all!

INTRODUCTION

Another photography adventure! With my husband, and this time joined by our daughter and son-in-law, it involved visiting the glorious Cloudehill Gardens.  We drove through the highly scenic Dandenongs to reach our destination.  It was hard not to want to just stop every few minutes to photograph this beautiful region of Victoria – Australia. During this garden photography exercise – I used my EOS 1100D Canon DSLR camera on a tripod with a remote timer for the big shots. I also used my Samsung Galaxy S6 Mobile Phone for quick spontaneous photographs.  The aim of this photography adventure was to gain some experience taking garden photographs during a time of day not ideal – being late morning and over mid-day.  I found it particularly difficult to work out how to shoot sky and garden together without over exposing the sky.  Although shady spots proved to be interesting – as filtered light offered soft lighting photographic opportunities.

Olinda, Victoria – Australia. Cloudehill Gardens Photographed by ©Karen Robinson – Feb 2017.   As I (Karen) was setting up to take this photograph the lighting changed a few times as the clouds covered and uncovered the sun.  At one point the clouds uncovered the sun allowing for it to filter through the over arching tree branches and leaves.  The dappled lighting was just beautiful which help create this wonderful natural tunneling effect.  The location for this particular photograph was just behind the Marquee Lawn area. The trees run alongside of Woolrich Road section of the gardens.  NB:  All images are protected by copyright.

ABOUT CLOUDEHILL GARDENS

“Cloudehill Gardens is located at the top of the Dandenongs, has an altitude of 580 metres with deep volcanic loam soil and 1.25 metres of rainfall which falls throughout most of the year with February, March and April being drier.  Sometimes there is a little frost and snow (Cloudehill 2017).  Not many have the chance to make a garden out of an old flower farm.  Cloudehill’s original planting goes back to Jim Woolrich when he began planting shrubs and trees and bulbs for the cut flower market and florist trade in the ’20s.  The flower farm thrived through to the ‘6os then, after 20 years gently resting, Jeremy Francis bought what was now something of a sleeping beauty’s garden and began making Cloudehill in 1992.  Cloudehill’s design derives from Italian renaissance gardens, English arts and crafts gardens, and from contemporary meadow gardening.  Compartments threaded along axes incorporate themes such as ‘expectation and surprise’.  Deep volcanic soil and moist mild weather allow plants to achieve majestic proportions; for example, the two weeping maples at the heart of the garden.  These glorious trees are historic, they came from Japan in 1928″ (Cloudehill 2017).

CONCLUSION

This day was more than just a time where I got to spend together as a family, it was also a time where we remembered my husband’s brother, also being my daughter’s Uncle who had passed away late last year 2016.  These moments truly reinforce that we only have a short time in this world and I am trying to spend it well…

INTRODUCTION

This was my second serious landscape photography adventure! And once more my dear husband came with me to help with lugging some of the equipment, to assist with the driving, and to keep me company.  He’s good company my hubby.  I used my EOS 1100D Canon DSLR camera on a tripod with a remote timer for the big shots. I also used my Samsung Galaxy S6 Mobile Phone for quick spontaneous photographs and for one short video.  The aim of this photography adventure was to gain some experience taking ‘golden hour‘ landscape photographs around sunset.

We ventured out into Mickleham and Beveridge farmlands located just on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia.  Being summertime – the farmland landscape is mostly dry golden grass fields, dotted with Australia Gum trees, and various large water holes filled to their capacity.  There is the occasional sighting of cattle and sheep with the sounds of a variety of Australian native wild birds soaring within the darkening blue skies. As the sun starting setting, it shed a simmering of soft warm light across the wide expanse of these farmlands.  It took two separate occasions for me to gain the photographs I wanted to achieve.

WEDGED-TAILED EAGLE VIDEO.

During our driving around the Mickleham farmland area, my husband spotted on a fence post, a large beautiful Wedged-tailed Eagle.  I managed to quickly video the eagle before it took flight into the high winds. These birds were once considered as pests by farmers. It was thought that they use to prey on their sheep.  This was found not to be the case; often the Wedged-tailed Eagle was just feasting on already dead sheep carcasses.  They are now a fully protected species in all Australian states and territories (Bush Heritage Australia 2017).

NB:  Sorry about the quality of the video – had to do it very quickly and forgot to focus my Samsung Galaxy S6 mobile phone!

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom 6.  I developed a small selection of photographs.  It was once more a new experience, especially developing the sunset photographs.  Please find below the best of what I took on those days.

CONCLUSION

We had such a lovely experience together my husband and I watching the sunset on the horizon as the day came to a close. Immersing ourselves into the golden coloured farmlands, and re-experiencing nature’s beauty and peacefulness was a great pleasure.  And then having had the opportunity to take photographs, just seemed to be a bonus.

INTRODUCTION

This was my first serious landscape photography adventure! My dear husband came with me to help with lugging some of the equipment, to assist with the driving, and to keep me company.  He’s good company my hubby.  It was an early morning start, as all I had read and watched about Landscape Photography on YouTube videos, indicated that to get the best photos with the best lighting, a photographer needed to be on location for the ‘golden hours’. This being an hour before sunrise and/or one hour after sunset.  So we were up at 4am to be on location by 5.30am.  Armed with little ‘manual mode’ camera operational experience and lots of enthusiasm – we managed to visit two locations.  These locations were just outside of Melbourne (Victoria, Australia), and just a little over an hours travelling time from home which was perfect.  The first being Malmsbury ‘Viaduct’ and ‘Botanical Gardens’, and the second being ‘Hanging Rock’ at Newham. ‘Hanging Rock’ provided to be an amazing location and I managed to take some lovely landscape photographs.  I used my EOS 1100D Canon DSLR camera on a tripod with a remote timer for the big shots. I also used my Samsung Galaxy S6 Mobile Phone for quick spontaneous photographs and one short video.

BLACK SWAMP WALLABY VIDEO

We spotted a ‘Black Swamp Wallaby’ on our way back down from the top of ‘Hanging Rock’ and I used the video mode on my mobile phone to quickly capture its presence before it saw us and hopped away back into the bush.  My husband and I were joking around and talking to one another while I was taking the video, so you can hear us talking – note to self “don’t talk while doing a video”!

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom 6. This too was a new experience for me using Lightroom.  It required a lot of patience on my behalf and time, in order to gain some ability to develop a small selection of photographs. Please find below the best of what I took on the day. Hopefully over time and with much more practice using the ‘manual mode’ on my camera, I will be able to take and develop photographs of a higher standard.
