“The above painting, one I painted back in 2016, I have chosen to accompany the below poem. It reflects an image of myself in the foreground, with my support networks in the background. They come from all walks of life; they are family, friends, work mates and community group members whom have been an integral part of my life over recent years, and all have contributed to my ability to reach a healthy mindset. Hence varying colours of difference; and colours with commonality. I couldn’t have got to this place where I am now without their support and this painting is a tribute to them all.”

POEM INSPIRATION

Last year 2018 – I received an email from the Overland with a request for poems.  The 2018 Poem theme was to be based around: ‘new collective, old struggles’; up to 88 lines; and entry to the Fair Australia Prize was free.  The poem was to be about: “What does unionism mean to people today? What should be its objectives? How can we come together to make real change, now and into the future? (Overland 2018)”.  I struggled a little with this theme.  Sadly it was not a successful entry but does not matter, it still serves as a way to be creative

Collective Union of One for All!

Show us a place where – we can be more than an isolated one
Show us a place where – we can be part of a greater us
Show us a place where – imaginings become real possibilities
Show us a place where – our future is stable kind and meaningful
Show us a place where – we can find a collective union of one for all…

Bring us to there – so we can fight our struggles not alone but united
Bring us to there – so we can realize our life in full
Bring us to there – so we are both humble and strong
Bring us to there – so we are valued for our human worth
Bring us to there – so we can find a collective union of one for all…

Let us – shed old selfish ways of thinking
Let us – give up on wealth for needless material accumulation
Let us – share our advantages of experience
Let us – have grandiose ideas about equality for everyone
Let us – be a collective union of one for all…

Now we are – believing what seemed illusive
Now we are – capable of enriching the lives of those united
Now we are – seeing real justice with an intent to nurture
Now we are – being what we dreamed in the dead of night
Now we are – a collective union of one for all…

Our future is – rich with expectations of a life that generations will treasure
Our future is – a union of people who care about what truly matters
Our future is – an investment in humankind
Our future is – a collective union of one for all-and-all for one!

CONCLUSION

These days I only write poems when I feel a great need to!  Photography has filled the gap in my heart – thus ticking the happy box whenever possible.

Creative Writing – 2018 “Ageing Old Is!…” Poem by Karen Robinson

POEM INSPIRATION

Each year, I receive an email that reminds me to think about writing a poem and entering it into the University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize.  So I gave it a go, once more, for this year 2018, with the hope that one day I might be lucky enough to be a finalist.  Well not this year for me!  But on saying this, it really isn’t about writing for a poetry prize but about getting me to sit down and think about putting together a group of words to express a feeling, thought, a moment!  Here below is this year’s effort and it’s about ageing!  It’s about the process of losing one’s youth, about the acceptance of growing old, and about reaching the end of one’s life with the hope that its been a worthy one…

Title:  “Ageing Old Is!” Poem

ageing old is…

bones creaking with osteoarthritis – as their new best friend

aged exhausted muscles constantly reminding the body – not to over stretch

unsightly mottled skin – mirroring years of weather abuse

weakened eyesight tightening focus – while grasping visions with expiry dates

failing dulled memory – showing signs of future incompetence…

ageing old is…

menacing hearing loss – nursing awkward miscommunications

hunched aching back – engaging in old people appearances

arthritic disabling hands – struggling with finite activity

grey loose hair gathering up – in sadden hair brushes

smelly wee collections – in places once pure clean and sweet…

ageing old is…

crusty masses of harden skin – mounting under feet once nimble

bulging belly fat – lazily lounging around body central

facial life lines time-sharing with emotions – of laughter and sullenness

overburdened knees locking – halfway down and halfway up in indecision

flabby weaken arms – gratefully receiving hugs of love and attention…

ageing old is…

brittle coffee stained teeth – sharing smiles of endearment

a stumpy wrinkled ring finger – wearing sacred tarnished wedding band

black annoying hairs on long gone youthful slender legs – now meandering on old

once expensive manicured nails – now surrendering to lack of significant care

blood pumping at high rates of pressure – finding solitude in cholesterol tablets…

ageing old is…

under-active misbehaving thyroid – causing socially unacceptable obesity

vitamin D lacking skin – demanding a daily show-down with the holy sun

unsaddled mammary glands hanging – as a constant reminder of motherhood long past

periodic kind verbal reminders to loved ones – that this time span is limited

a tiredness not of lack of sleep – but from nearing the end of one’s existence…

ageing old is…

a knowing

that this old human ruin – now approaching depletion – has endured a life well spent…

Photography 2017 – Landscape: “Valley of a Thousand Hills” Written and Photographed by Karen Robinson

“Photography:  Painting and Drawing with Light”

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this travel and photography adventure was to revisit an area we had not been back to for a number of years.  The Strath Creek region, Victoria – Australia is so green during this time of the year as winter rains help to ensure the landscape is lush, and the creeks have running water; unlike summertime where the landscape can be dry and leave the creeks to run with little-to-no water at times.  My husband was the driver and my daughter joined us as well which was a lovely treat for us as her parents.  She is a keen bird photographer whilst I enjoy landscape photography.  Our first stop was at the Murchison Gap Lookout which overlooks the ‘Valley of a Thousand Hills’ region.  The views from this outlook are just breathtaking and because we were visiting here during the week, it was quiet and peaceful.  There were a number of birds inhabiting the surrounding bush-land which made my daughter happy!  The air was fresh and crisp; the sun shone for us long enough to take some good photographs, and time enough for us to enjoy our time together.

‘VALLEY OF A THOUSAND HILLS’ – STRATH CREEK

This part of Victoria is very picturesque and we didn’t have to travel far from where we live to be amongst this beautiful region.  Murchison Gap Outlook proved to be the best place to view the ‘Valley of the Thousand Hills’.  A noticeboard found on located provided the following information:

Murchison Gap:  Prior to the cutting being created, the former Bradford-Flowerdale Road depicted in the far right image, utilised a different route over Murchison Hill.  Buggy drivers would cut saplings at the top of Murchison Hill to use as a brake on the steep descent.  At the bottom of the hill the buggy drivers would dispose of the used saplings, which created a pile that when considered too big, would be burnt off.

The view from where you are standing overlooks the ‘Valley of a Thousand Hills’.

The small image to the right is the same view, taken some time between 1900 and 1930, from a point along Murchison Spur Road.  Murchison Spur road is believed to have been originally used by early miners, timber cutters and saw millers.

If you continue along the Spur Road you will enjoy the view from many vantage points, including perspectives similar to the ones pictured.

Original Selectors:  The Murchison and Mackenzie families, who lived in the Strath Creek are between 1838 and 1870, were the founders of Kerrisdale and Flowerdale Stations respectively.  Along with Reedy Creek Station, these properties were the original three squatting runs of the area, that incidentally all met at this site.  Farquhar Mackenzie, former Lieutenant in the Scottish Regiment, arrived in NSW in 1836.  He travelled south to the Goulburn District in NSW a short time later.  In March 1838 he mustered all his stock together to follow the route travelled by Hume and Hovell and arrived at the Goulburn River, Victoria, in May 1838.  He then travelled up river to King Parrot Creek and settled a large tract of land.  In July 1841 Farquhar’s cousin, Roderick Mackenzie, arrived in Melbourne with his wife.  He purchased part of Farquhar’s land and named the property Flowerdale after his family property in Gairloch, Scotland.  Roderick built a stone cottage in 1842 and in July of 1849 Roderick died of consumption and the property was sold.  In May 1842, John Murchison moved his family from NSW and joined Farquhar to continue farming the remaining land, which they called Kerrisdale after Farquhar Mackenzie’s family property.  Murchison Gap is named for the original squatter of Kerrisdale, John Murchison (Murrindindi Shire Council/Mitchell Shire Council/State Government of Victoria 2015).

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this landscape photography  exercise – I used my new compact system camera a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lense. For some of the shots I used the camera hand-held, and for others, I used the camera mounted on a tripod with a remote timer.  I am still getting use to understanding the abilities of my new camera and lense, but it was such a pleasure though to use, and good for someone like myself trying to learn to be a better photographer!  I also used my Samsung Galaxy S6 mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom 6.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.   Please find both above and below the best of what I took during this travel and photography adventure!

VALLEY OF A THOUSAND HILLS PAINTING

Details:  Abstract Painting No. 51 Titled “Valley of a Thousand Hills”, June 2010/March 2011, Acrylic on Canvas, 220cms Length x 120cms Wide x 3cms Deep, Painted by Abstract Artist – Karen Robinson.  NB:  Please click on this link to view my Abstract Paintings Portfolio

Painting Story: It was in June 2010 that my daughter, my husband and I decided to travel up through the Strath Creek region of Victoria (Australia) for a fishing day – my husband loved fishing. This was the first time we had all gone fishing together since the death of our son Ben on 5th November, 2009. Ben, our 25-year-old son was killed instantly in a single vehicle car crash. As a family, our lives had been shattered by his loss. It was the first time, since Ben’s death that we found the courage to go off and do something like fishing. We went with mixed feelings and an emotional struggle, in getting truly interested in what we were doing. But it was easy to see that it was a day of reflection, for the three of us.
It was a beautiful, fine winter day! The air was crisp and clean. The area was green and the trees were in Autumn mode. As we drove through the region, my spirits were up lifted by the beauty of the area. My daughter and husband organised themselves to fish and I went about taken photos which I liked to do. I could see by the look on my daughter’s face that she was quietly reflecting. My husband was off in another direction also deep in thought. It was clear, we were all thinking about our Ben whilst amongst Australia’s beautiful bush-land. I came away that day with my spirits lifted and a step closer to being able to live without our son in our lives. The quietness and solitude of the day shared with my loved ones, amongst the stunning beauty and tranquility of the area named “Valley of a Thousand Hills” Strath Creek region (Victoria, Australia) was all we needed to feel at peace. Even if just for the day. Hence this became my inspiration for this painting called “Valley of a Thousand Hills”.
Featured in the painting is a large English Elm Tree. Whilst driving through this area, we came across a property named “Kerrisdale Station” 852 King Parrot Road, Strath Creek. The entrance had these magnificent, large English Elms lining the driveway down through to the homestead. Their strong, dark trunks and branches held a display of beautiful lemon, yellow and pale green autumn leaves. Another Station in the region called “Strathglen” had Lipstick Maple Trees lined either side of a long road, stretched into the distant hills. These trees had a single, slender trunk with branches like arms reaching up into the bright, blue sky. They were dressed with pretty pinks, golden yellows, amber, orange and deep auburn leaves. These trees which would have been planted by early settlers where a strange contrast within our Australia bush. But so beautiful within this magical setting of the Strath Creek region!

CONCLUSION

Re-visiting this region did bring back some sad memories of my last visit to this region back in June 2010.  Now, 7 years along from then – I was able to enjoy the company of my husband and my daughter, doing what we enjoy doing together. Being out and about experiencing the natural wonders of the world really does rejuvenate the body and soul.  Photography is just another way I can improve my sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!  It definitely works for me and once more we finished up our day in high spirits which is a good outcome for the three of us…

Happy photography all!

INTRODUCTION

During mid 2016 I received an email from Gail Buschman, Senior Graphic Designer of Sage Publishing, an international academic publisher based in Thousand Oaks, California.  They were interested in using one of my images ‘Abstract Painting No. 64 – Titled ‘For One’s Well-being on the cover of a forthcoming textbook; and the Second Edition of William J Ray’s ‘Abnormal Psychology‘ – Pennsylvania State University.  They asked if I would be interested in licensing it to them for book publishing, specifically for print and electronic book cover and website landing page header, circulation 20,000, geography – world rights, duration 7 year license/usage from publication date, exposure 1 language, inclusive of a credit line on the back cover.  After some discussions with family and friends, and after becoming a member with Copyright Agency/Viscopy – I agreed.

THE BOOK

Abnormal Psychology written by William J Ray - Second Edition www.idoartkarenrobinson.com

‘Abnormal Psychology’  written by William J Ray – Second Edition http://www.idoartkarenrobinson.com

In Abnormal Psychology: Perspectives on Human Behavior and Experience Second Edition, William J. Ray brings together current perspectives concerning the manner in which the human mind, behavior, and experience can be understood. In addition to the traditional psychological literature, this book draws from work in the cognitive and affective neurosciences, epidemiology, ethology, and genetics. Ray’s focus is on a unification and integration of the biopsychosocial understandings of human behavior within a broader consideration of human culture and language as it applies to abnormal psychology (Amazon 2017)”

THE PAINTING’S STORY – “FOR ONE’S WELL-BEING”

“This painting titled “For One’s Well-being” has been inspired by the groups of people I have brought into my life through activities such as Art Therapy and Creative Writing provided by Mind Australia; and also my volunteering and paid work that I do with Road Trauma Support Services Victoria.

For the sake of my own well-being, I have found over a course of time, that being part of community groups such as these organisations, has truly helped me gain a better sense of well-being. Within the comfort and security of such organisations, I have witnessed how people have been empowered to voice their feelings, share, reveal, support, encourage each other during times of great difficulty alongside of professional support systems. I have also witnessed how when participants choose to come and join such organisations, they grow strong and more-able to deal with day-to-day difficulties; and I am one of those people.

My painting reflects an image of myself in the foreground, with my support networks in the background.

© Karen Robinson, February 2016

CONCLUSION

It was pleasing to have this particular artwork of mine used in such a way.  Hopefully this usage will also convey the painting’s story and help contribute to the knowledge base of students and teachers using ‘Abnormal Psychology’ as a learning tool…

39 David Hockney Current Exhibition at National Gallery Victoria, Melbourne, Australia – Nov 2016.  The gallery had provided a huge life-size photo image applied to a wall, featuring David Hockney standing in his studio.  Visitors of the gallery were then able to stand beside the image of David Hockney and have their photo taken.  The security guard at the gallery kindly offered to take a photo of me with David Hockney’s image which was very nice of him.   Photographed by Security Guard at the National Gallery of Victoria.

INTRODUCTION

For our very last CAE ‘Produce Paintings & Drawings’ class, we were taken to the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia to see David Hockney’s latest solo exhibition titled ‘CURRENT’.  He is arguably Britain’s greatest living artist and in his seventy-ninth year!  Despite Hockney’s years, he still looks for new ways to take risks which are driven by his unending curiosity (NGV 2016).  Viewing this exhibition proved to be a wonderful experience which I enjoyed very much, and was grateful for being given the opportunity to view.  The exhibition consisted of over 1200 works including paintings, digital drawings, photography and video works by David Hockney.

DAVID HOCKNEY REFLECTS ON THE EXHIBITION – CURRENT

The YouTube here below has David Hockey talking about this exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria being the first show that really exhibits the iPads and the iPhones work he had created.  He states that he got the ‘brushes app’ process working quickly and well; and how much he enjoys using these new pieces of technology to produce art work.  He also talks about his creative processes used to produce this exhibition (NGV 2016).

DAVID HOCKNEY – SELECTED iPHONES AND iPAD DRAWINGS

Viewing David Hockney’s ‘selection of 104 drawings using an iPhone 2009 and iPad 2010-12, comprising still life, landscape and portrait works’ (NGV 2016) was truly amazing, and for me – very enjoyable.  I loved seeing how these technologies produced a selection of work that was considered most worthy of such a prestigious exhibition; and by such a famous, well established and masterful artist. So good for up-and-coming tech savvy artists!

DAVID HOCKNEY’S PAINTING ‘BiGGER TREES NEAR WARTER’

David Hockney’s massive oil painting titled ‘Bigger trees near Warter’ (as featured in the series of photographs below) within this particular exhibition, is awe inspiring.  The spacial feeling you get when you walk in the room it inhabits, is surprising.  Cleverly – it has the viewer needing to scan the room to appreciate the whole work.  David Hockney talks about this spacial awareness in the YouTube above (NGV 2016).

David Hockney talks here below about using digital photography, about manipulation of said, about the opportunities to recreate images, and about being able deliver to the viewer a different way of looking at his works (Published on May 14, 2015 – Channel 3 News).  Hockney talks about still being very excited about pictures!

DAVID HOCKNEY – PORTRAITS

David Hockney’s Exhibition ‘CURRENT’ also features a ‘complete series of 82 portraits and 1 still life, a body of acrylic on canvas paintings 2013-16’ (NGV 2016).  These portraits have all been painted by David Hockney and depict those connected in some way with Hockney’s daily life (NGV 2016).  Upon entering the area of the exhibition housing these portraits, you cannot help but think about the spans of work he has achieve in such a small amount of time being between 2013 and 2016 – where does he get the energy?

CONCLUSION

An amazing exhibition, an amazing living artist and an extraordinary life of a man who has devoted much of his life to his passion, the creation and production of his art work – David Hockney.  I loved it!

INTRODUCTION

My 14th class in ‘Produce Paintings’ and ‘Produce Drawings’ (these being subjects that are part of ‘Certificate III in Visual Arts’) proved to be a productive session.  Our teachers once more emphasised our need to put together our portfolios and bring in next week, so that we could go through them and select artworks for assessment the following week.

‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Paintings’ class commenced with our teacher, Toby Dutton, checking in with each of the students individually.  We generally talked about the preparation of our art portfolio for assessment and said requirements to be met.

MY ‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS PROJECT No. 1

  • My Painting Palette:  My colour palette was based on trying to achieve a colour story that would compliment each other, but also have some colours that would be in contrast to one another.

  • A3 Canvas Paper:  I used a canvas that I had prepared within my last ‘Produce Paintings’ session as a source of inspiration for this week’s first painting.

MY ‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS PROJECT No. 2

  • During this session I managed to complete an additional painting: I used the left over oil paint from my first painting.  It gave me an opportunity to let go and just paint freely, experiencing the feel of the brush strokes and the flow of the oil paint on the canvas paper.  A great way to just experiment!

‘PRODUCE DRAWINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Drawings’ class commenced after our lunch break.  This gave me a chance to recharge after the ‘Produce Paintings’ class.  The teacher, TIM JONES had each of us set up our work area in readiness to undertake another session of ‘Life Drawing’.  Once again we were made aware of the processes we needed to undertake, which had been explained to us during a previous ‘Produce Drawings’ class session with Toby Dutton.

MY ‘PRODUCE DRAWING’ CLASS PROJECT

  • Here below is my easel set-up during the ‘life drawing’ class.  Under instruction from our teacher, we completed a set of ‘life drawings’ done in quick succession; some being drawn within minutes and others being given up to 20 minutes to complete.

VISUAL DIARY DRAWINGS

In between classes I managed to do only the one pencil drawing in my visual diary. Time-poor this week and this was all I could sadly manage!

MOBILE PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY

Each week before and between these classes I often take photographs, and just on my mobile phone.  I have always been a keen ‘photo-taker’ and do enjoy trying to capture small moments of daily life around me.  While these photos have been taken on my Samsung 6 mobile phone, I feel it is better than not taking them at all – as using my SLR camera would not be practical on these days.  It has inspired me to think about doing more photography in the new year and blogging about it more fully – time will tell!

INTRODUCTION

My 13th class in ‘Produce Paintings’ and ‘Produce Drawings’ (these being subjects that are part of ‘Certificate III in Visual Arts’) progressed as per usual.  Our teachers informed us that we are near reaching the end of these classes, and it will soon be time to review our art portfolios for assessment.  Hence the importance during these last few weeks to look at fully applying ourselves – to ensure we have what will be needed in the way of produced artworks.

‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Paintings’ class commenced with our teacher, Toby Dutton, checking in with each of the students individually.

  • Source of my painting inspiration – a Michelle Breton Painting:
Painting by Michelle Breton used as a source of inspiration for this 'Produce Painting' class.

Painting by Michelle Breton, Octobre A Ceret, Mixed Media on Italian Canvas, 152 x 137cm.  Used as a source of inspiration for this ‘Produce Painting’ class.

Michelle Brenton states “There can be no present without a past. The past has a place in my work, it engages me and gives me a sense of the future, I want to acknowledge it in order to seek out my place in the present. Painting for me is similar to an archaeological excavation, but in reverse: rather than digging to discover the past, I am building layers to reveal it. When I first started painting with my teacher Kerry Johns, I was extremely moved by the process. I had no idea what I was attempting to do, but my connection to the paint and the surface (be it canvas, paper or board) provided me with the freedom to express myself. It was a liberating experience, reminding me of dancing, which played a big part in my childhood in Adelaide. There is a similarity for me between dance and painting, they are both forms of expression without the use of words or voice. But what is expressed can be heard just as loudly as any spoken word. Working in the Blue Mountains was a wonderful beginning, painting still life and landscapes in a superb setting. But I wanted more, abstract was calling me. I needed to paint from another source than what I was seeing, and after completing my degree at RMIT in Fine Arts and Majoring in Painting I was on the path of abstraction. In 2006 I had my first solo show in Melbourne. In 2008 I lived and painted in Berlin and Italy (Liveguide 2016)”.

INTRODUCTION

My 12th class in ‘Produce Paintings’ and ‘Produce Drawings’ (these being subjects that are part of ‘Certificate III in Visual Arts’) progressed as per usual with the exception of a personal interruption during my ‘Produce Drawings’ class.  I’d received a telephone call from 774 ABC Melbourne Radio asking if I would do a telephone interview later that day in relation to the work that I do with Road Trauma Support Services Victoria.  I agreed, but it through me a little off-kilter, hence my drawings during this class didn’t receive my uppermost attention unfortunately.  I did though enjoy my ‘Produce Painting’ class where I ventured into completing a figurative painting during the class session.  One other activity I really enjoy doing on these days is taking photos of and around Degraves Street, usually before I start my classes and during my lunch break.  It is another form of creative outlet that provides me with a good sense of well-being!

‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Paintings’ class commenced with our teacher, VIN RYAN, checking in with each of the students individually. During recent classes, Vin had been encouraging us to research particularly artists that we found inspirational; artists that could assist us in learning more about new techniques and painting styles.  In other words, generally to look for ways we could stretch our creative endeavours!

  • Source of my painting inspiration:  During this session I decided I wanted to paint something that was inspired by a painting titled ‘Night Wind’.  It was painted by Lisa Morgan, an Australian Artist and currently lives on the Sunshine Coast (Tusk Gallery 2016).  Lisa’s paintings reflect a vibrancy which emanates from the environment she lives within, and is a “study of beauty, colour and light with birds, trees and figures of people situated within her paintings” (Tusk Gallery 2016).

MY ‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS PROJECT

  • My Painting Palette:  My colour palette was based on trying to achieve a colour story that would compliment each other, but also have some colours that would be in contrast to one another.  I found myself needing to broaden my colour palette, but without having to make up the colour myself was a desirable thought and more convenient and easier for me.  So this week I purchased some new colours being:  (1) Old Holland – Ivory Black Extra, Old Holland – Cinnabar Green Light Extra, and Michael Harding’s – Indian Yellow.

  • My Completed Figurative Painting:  Inspired by Lisa Morgan and no masterpiece of mine for sure, but I am continuing to enjoy using oil paints.  The applying of the paint to the canvas paper is pleasurable, and how it looks on completion is worth the effort of persevering with this medium for me I feel.  Very therapeutic – art for therapy!

ABOUT MICHAEL HARDING’S OIL PAINT

Michael Harding uses a simple process which dates back to the days of old masters to create handmade oil paint that is vibrant, beautiful and durable with uncompromising quality (Michael Harding 2016).

ABOUT MIXING COLOR:  PAINTING WITH A LIMITED PALETTE

In searching for a YouTube that would help me better understand about using a limited colour palette, I managed to find this one below.  “Professional portrait painter Brian Neher demonstrates how to mix a variety of colours for painting portraits by using a limited palette of four colours plus white” (Brian Neher 2015).  Brian also explains why he has opted to use a range of ready-made-oil-colours rather than just mixing from a limited palette, in order to save time each day when preparing for his painting activity for the day.

‘PRODUCE DRAWINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Drawings’ class commenced after our lunch break.  This gave me a chance to recharge after the ‘Produce Paintings’ class.  The teacher, VIN RYAN had each of us set up our work area in readiness to undertake another session of ‘Life Drawing’.  Once again we were made aware of the processes we needed to undertake, which had been explained to us during a previous ‘Produce Drawings’ class session with Toby Dutton.

This week I was asked by ABC 774 if I would like to do an interview with them about road safety and road trauma. To talk about the work that I myself and so many other people at Road Trauma Support Services do every day – in the hope that these efforts will save lives and reduce serious injury caused by road trauma.  The interview was directly in response to a dreadful car crash that had occurred just this week where a 15-year-old boy had been killed, two young girls critically injured and two others injured in a single car crash.  This above is the interview sound cloud produced by TAC Victoria with Raf Epstein – DRIVE Program ABC 774 featuring myself as the interviewee.

INTRODUCTION

My 11th class in ‘Produce Paintings’ and ‘Produce Drawings’ (these being subjects that are part of ‘Certificate III in Visual Arts’) progressed as per usual.  These classes up until now have not just given me an opportunity to broaden my arts skill base, but also an opportunity to get to know other students.  It has helped me appreciate the differences in how individuals apply their creative self to their artworks.

‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Paintings’ class commenced with our teacher, VIN RYAN, checking in with each of the students individually.  During this session I decided I wanted to paint something of an abstract nature.  Vin recommended that I look at the work of an Australian Artist Ralph Bristow to gain some inspiration.

Ralph Bristow is a visual artist who lives in North East Regional Victoria.  He has recently completed a purpose-built studio overlooking the Broken River.  This space had allowed him to paint on canvas, expanding and exploring new possibilities.  Ralph’s paintings are multidimensional.  Arranged in a form of mindful collage combined with complex colour combinations as well as monochromatic palates.  He applies paint spontaneously, synchronising hand and eye with the present moment, streaming consciousness into his work.  Some paintings are resolved relatively promptly, keeping the work fresh and expressive, trying to hold and capture a moment.  Other works are more complex in their resolve, telling a story of going through a process of layering, obliterating, repainting, building up paint that weaves in, out and through his work.  Works are gouache, ink, aquarelle pencil, mediums on paper as well as acrylic on canvas.  He is inspired by his experiences of the spirit, science, landscape and present consciousness.  Ralph Bristow is interested in how his paintings are a portable meeting place, a place where lives mingle, where his work is transformed from his experience into the lives of the viewer.  He now invites the viewer to share his journey within each painting (Bristow 2015).”

  • Gouache:  One of the mediums Ralph Bristow uses is gouache.  I managed to find a suitable YouTube which covers how to use it reasonably well – please find here below.

  • Aquarelle Pencil:  Another medium that Ralph Bristow uses is aquarelle pencil.  I managed to find a suitable YouTube which covers how to use it reasonably well – please find here below.

INTRODUCTION

My 10th class in ‘Produce Paintings’ and ‘Produce Drawings’ (these being subjects that are part of ‘Certificate III in Visual Arts’) progressed as per usual.  I was mostly happy with my art work this week, and hopefully as time progresses, I will find ways of improving my art skills base that will have me feeling most satisfied.  No matter the outcome – it is great to able to be part of this creative environment; and for this I am most grateful as these experiences are a form of art for therapy for me!

‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS

Our ‘Produce Paintings’ class commenced with our teacher, VIN RYAN, checking in with each of the students individually.  During this session I decided to use a photo of a painting that I had found on my mobile phone as a source of inspiration.  Sadly, I didn’t at the time write down the details of the artist, so if anyone reading this blog can tell me who was the artist, I will make sure the details are included – my apologies.

MY ‘PRODUCE PAINTINGS’ CLASS PROJECT

  • My Painting Source Of Inspiration:   I chose this particular painting featured below to use as a source of inspiration.  Vin, our teacher explained to me that the artist had used a ‘scumbling‘ technique.  “It’s a painting technique in which a layer of broken, speckled, or scratchy color is added over another color so that bits of the lower layers(s) of color show through the scumbling.  The result gives a sense of depth and color variation to an area” (Marion Boddy-Evans 2016). For the purposes of being able to create just one painting during this class session, I decided to concentrate only on trying to paint an interpretation of the face, hair, collar and shoulder areas.

  • My Painting Palette:  My colour palette for my painting was based on achieving colours that were not unique to the original painting, but colours which I found particularly appealing to me.

LIFE DRAWING WITH DEREK BOSHIER YOUTUBE

I came across this YouTube showing Derek Boshier conducting a master class in ‘life drawing’ and found it enlightening:-

“Most readily known for his Pop art, painter Derek Boshier has worked in many media, and continues practice as primarily a narrative figurative painter. Now living in Los Angeles, Boshier experienced the rigor of training on the National Diploma in Design, and then as a graduate student at RCA. Boshier has exhibited his work—as well as taught extensively in art schools–all over the world” (Derek Boshier Jun 2013).
