“Photography: Painting and Drawing with Light”
INTRODUCTION
On this photography adventure day, we only had to take a 5 minute drive from home! Beside one of Westmeadows, Victoria – Australia local backstreets there stands a tall old gumtree with a large hollow. At this location each year, around November, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos come and nest at what is perhaps an unusual location. Cars and people busily pass by daily under their nest, but they seem to have adapted to the suburban lifestyle. I cannot help feel sad for our bird wildlife. Melbourne’s ever emerging urban sprawl means that tree felling of large areas of land is therefore – stripping large areas of bird habitats. Thus leaving birds to find unusual locations to subsist or not at all – hence bird numbers dwindling. So I hope in years to come to continue to find these iconic Australian native birds revisit this old gum tree…

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED
During this photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens, and a Sigma150-600mm F5-6.3 DGOS HSM with a Sigma Mount Converter MC-11. For some of these photographs I used the camera hand-held but for most of the shots, I used a Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.
THE PHOTOGRAPHS
On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. I developed a small selection of photographs. During the process of developing them I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure. Please find both above and below, the best of what I took during this photography adventure!
CONCLUSION
Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul. Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

Thank you – I was glad to get these photographs as I had promised myself for a number of years to set a task to achieve. So I was happy when seeing the Cockatoos nesting again and was able to do…warm regards Karen

These photos are great and the bird’s personality really comes through. The location in the middle of people things reminded me of some peregrine falcons who nested outside my husband ‘s office in Center City Philadelphia some years back 8 stories up on a ledge, going about their business oblivious of people.
