“Photography:  Painting and Drawing with Light”

Our photography adventure on this day had us travelling to just outside the township of East Warburton, Victoria – Australia, visiting the mysterious and spectacular Redwood Forest.  The forest’s exotic Californian Redwoods being the tallest tree species in the world, planted by the Board of Works around 1930 means they are now nearing a century of growth.  There are over 1476 trees ranging from 20 metres to the tallest being 55 metres. During our stroll through these magnificent trees, we felt dwarfed by their sheer height!  Because we came on a clear sunny day, and around mid-morning, the sunlight was gently filtering through the tree tops thus allowing for perfect photography conditions. Towards the end of the plantation, we discovered walking trails that took us to Cement Creek East Branch.  Here we found the fresh water creek babbling through lush green vegetation where numerous well established Lacey Tree-ferns stood like elegant umbrellas. Their large leaf canopies filtered warm yellow sunlight onto small green ground level ferns.  Further in from the creek’s edge, lanky tall gum trees housed noisy native birds. Finding this magical environment alongside of the Redwood Forest was truly a bonus, and unexpected. We enjoyed our discovery of this location and the time we spent there…

During this landscape photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For these photographs I used the camera mounted on a tripod.  I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.   Please find both above and below, the best of what I took during this photography adventure!

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul.  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

  1. I have visited California redwoods in a couple of different forests and I really enjoyed seeing these. The accompanying vegetation looks different from what I saw in CA but the towering straight spires into the sky is just the same. You have some beautiful shots here.
