INTRODUCTION
This week Craigieburn Camera Club conducted its first Zoom Club Photography meeting to present the April Photographic Open Competition 2020. In the Intermediate Section, I received a Merit Award for the above photograph. Judge Paul Robinson (NB: No relation to me) was the independent judge for said and this is what he had to say about my above photograph of High Camp, Victoria – Australia ‘Granite Boulder Region‘ taken on a beautiful early morning around sunrise.
The judges comments: You have captured the mood of a crisp summer dawn commencing its glitter on the grasslands with a deal of sensitivity.The warm coloured sky and the grasslands are harmoniously in colour balance where one can sense the oncoming heat of the day.It has the look of a classic Australian landscape particularly from the Australian Heidelberg School of painters (aka Australian impressionists) as well as some of the early colonial painters such as John Glover in Tasmania.It is worthwhile to continue to explore this kind of domesticated landscape which has not been pursued much since the advent of digital photography.
I was thrilled to have received this award and thankful to the club for working out a way to continue on with these events despite the limitations we all facing currently.
PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED
During this photography adventure back in December 2019 – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens. Also used a Right Angle L Plate Bracket for my camera so that I could turn it to do portraits or landscape photographs more easily which worked a treat. I use a BH-40 Ballhead for my tripod which helps make taking my photographs not just easier but much more enjoyable. During these photography adventures, I use an Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and to ensure I gain GPS location readings.
CONCLUSION
Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul. But over the months to come – these adventures will need to be put on hold. It will be a time to discover home photography – perhaps Macro! Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

Hi Claudia – thank you. The natural lighting on that particular morning was just beautiful. The spot where I composed the shot was open. It had far-reaching views with nothing in the foreground to dodge. The honey-coloured grass sparkled as the sun rose higher in the sky and that helped to establish a lovely leading line into the scene. I managed to have the right camera settings, right composition and developed within Lightroom Classic. Can be lucky when everything comes together to be able to create an image that is memorable … Thank you once more…Karen
