INTRODUCTION

This year 2023 – the Robinson Family (my family) was able to finalise details regarding monies raised from my exhibition titled ‘Photographic Portraits of Nature’ held at Broadmeadows Town Hall (Melbourne, Australia) earlier this year.  All monies raised through print sales were forwarded directly to Amber Community Organisation to put towards their Art Therapy Creative Writing Program.  This program offers sessions to volunteers of Amber Community who have been impacted by road trauma in their lives.  It gives them an important opportunity to meet with like-minded people in a safe and supportive environment.

Hume City Council Broadmeadows (Victoria, Australia) also purchased 6 Archival Limited Edition Prints – “Woodland Historic Park Tree Series” for their Hume Civic Collection 2023.  A wonderful outcome for me as a photographer but also for my family.

CONCLUSION

Photography overall – is just another way to improve my sense of well-being and at the same time – helps me be creative. Being out and about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits is a real privilege for sure. It really does rejuvenate the body and soul. The inclusion of documentary-style photography is helping me to expand on my existing photography skills and ensures my creative endeavours remain a strong focus in my life and in turn, makes me happy…

INTRODUCTION


While I mostly enjoy photographing landscapes and birdlife – my encounters with documentary-style of photography have proven to be just as enjoyable and interesting. It’s allowing me to experiment, take creative risks, and broaden my photography skills – and it’s fun!


Documentary-style photography came into play upon visiting this location ‘Day’s Mill and Farm – Farm Machinery’ at Murchison, Victoria – Australia.  It was a beautiful autumn day with a clear blue sky and sunshine that heated up the day nicely making it very pleasant to be out and about on this photography adventure with hubby. “Day’s Mill and Farm is the best-preserved 19th-century flour mill in Victoria (Australia) and contains probably the finest example of traditional milling technology in working form in its original setting in Australia.  The property consists of the mill, a house and about a dozen farm buildings on 4 hectares (10 acres) of land south of Murchison in the Goulburn Valley, 150 km north of Melbourne.  Day’s Mill is managed by Parks Victoria. The Day’s Mill and Farm derives from the combination of the site of buildings and artefacts representing farming, milling and domestic life.  As a complex, there is little that is comparable.  The agricultural collection contains significant remnants of earlier agricultural machinery and practices reflecting historical changes in how the property was used.  Generally, however most of the agricultural machinery dates from the early 20th century.  During this period Joseph Day ran the property as a mixed farm which he had increased to 896 acres by 1910 (Friends of Day’s Mill in association with Parks Victoria 2000).”

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT


During this photography adventure, I used my Sony a7RivA+ Full-frame Camera paired with my Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Lens.  For the outside shots, I use a tripod for sturdiness.  Inside buildings I mostly handheld my camera/lens because of confirmed spaces and trying not to get in the way of other people.  On my return home, I downloaded all the images into Lightroom Classic where I catalogued and develop the images, I thought were worthy of my time and energy.  A creative process while time-consuming is the most rewarding I feel…


CONCLUSION

INTRODUCTION – Update on my blogging habits…




Getting back into blogging has been a struggle for me.  That doesn’t mean I haven’t been undertaking many photography adventures with my hubby and on some occasions with my daughter and granddaughter – it just means that after COVID in recent years, I got out of the discipline of doing them regularly.  For those of you interested in what I have been periodically photographing – please visit me on my Instagram account where I regularly upload images.


My photographic interests have mainly consisted of landscape, seascape, nature, garden, bird, animal, and street photography which I will still very much maintain but of late am also including more documentary-style photography as well!  Here below is my latest documentary style of photography effort. Hoping those who have followed my blog in the past will accept my apologies for my infrequency. Thank you to all who have taken an interest, it is greatly appreciated.


DOCUMENTARY STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY:  




During this photography adventure to Seymour Railway Heritage Centre Open Day 2023 (Victoria, Australia) – I was mindful of colour, shapes, contrasts, leading lines and especially how natural light helped to tell a photographic story. During the development of each image in Lightroom Classic, I took care to remove ‘noise’ wherever possible, highlight points of interest and hopefully capture moments in time that help tell the story of the day’s adventure. The inclusion of documentary-style photography is helping me to expand on my existing photography skills and ensures my creative endeavours remain a strong focus in my life and in turn, makes me happy…

Please find here images of the – 42 Archival Limited Edition Fine Art Prints. You will find them at my ‘Photographic Portraits of Nature by ©Karen Robinson’ solo exhibition at the Broadmeadows Town Hall, Victoria – Australia.  It’s running from 28th November 2022 through to 5th February 2023 – 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday at 10 Dimboola Road Broadmeadows (closed for Xmas/New Year from 22nd December and reopening 3rd January 2023).


Ultimately the best option for viewing prints is to go and look at the exhibition in person. It’s the best way to see and appreciate the quality of the prints. Looking at prints online does not help to convey the true colours/pixel quality and the overall feeling of the print.

CONCLUSION

LAUNCH NIGHT Solo Exhibition

My solo exhibition launched last night (1st December 2022) titled Photographic Portraits of Nature which consists of 42 Archival Limited Fine Art Prints officially opened last night!  All our hard work and efforts resulted in a successful outcome and one that couldn’t have been achieved without the help and support of many people:  Hume City Council, Carmen Reid and her team, Northern Star Weekly Newspaper, Amber Community Organisation, my dear family, and those who were able to attend being friends, past work colleagues, neighbours and supporting Hume Council members. I also need to thank those who were unable to come to the night – a big thank you also for your ongoing support and encouragement along the way.


Below is the speech that I delivered at the Launch of  Photographic Portraits of Nature.

    Thank you, Carmen Reid – Hume Galleries Curator & Community Development Officer, Arts and Culture Hume City Council, Melbourne – Australia for the work that you have done on behalf of Hume City Council in opening this event tonight. And for the work you and your team did in putting together this solo exhibition for me.  A wonderful job and greatly appreciated by me and my family.

    I want to express my sincere gratitude to Hume City Councilfor giving me this incredible opportunity to showcase my photography work here at this grand Town Hall of Broadmeadows.

    To my dear family, my husband Mark, daughter and our beautiful little granddaughter – thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement, and endless help – I am a fortunate woman to have you in my life.

    But not to be forgotten – all of you who have kindly taken time out to attend here tonight – sincerely thank you and I hope you enjoy being here and viewing the photographic portraits of nature. Please consider purchasing prints either framed or unframed as all monies raised by their sale will be going directly to Amber Community(formerly known as Road Trauma Support Services Victoria). My family and I have been involved with this incredible organisation for over ten years now helping to raise awareness about road safety in the hope it will help prevent road trauma. All monies raised here from the sale of prints will be going towards an Expressive Arts Creative Writing Program at Amber Community for those who have been impacted by road trauma – in memory of our son, my daughter’s brother Ben.

    Before I sign off here tonight – Just a little about the exhibition and myself. These portraits of nature shown here tonight have been a small selection chosen from a much larger collection of prints.  My hubby and I and along with my daughter and granddaughter over the years have been on many photography adventures within Victoria.  It has been a wonderful way for me to be creative, and nurture my relationships with my family and has helped to maintain a healthy sense of well-being.

Prints will be available for purchase, either framed or unframed details available at the exhibition.  All monies received from the sale of prints from the ‘Photographic Portraits of Nature by Karen Robinson’ Exhibition at the Broadmeadows Town Hall will be fully donated to the Amber Community Organisation from the Robinson Family in memory of Ben James Robinson, our son killed in a single car crash 2009 at the age of 25 years old.


“Amber Community is a not-for-profit organisation contributing to the safety and well-being of road users.  They provide counselling and support to people impacted by road trauma and address the attitudes and behaviours of road users through education.  Counselling services are provided free of charge to anyone who has been impacted by a road incident.”


The Robinson Family ask that the Amber Community Organisation award the said donated funds received to be put towards an ‘Expressive Arts Creative Writing Program’ to help support Amber Community Organisation volunteers who have been impacted by road trauma.


CONCLUSION




Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of well-being and at the same time – be creative. Being out and about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits is a real privilege for sure. It really does rejuvenate the body and soul.

Exciting News – I am now able to share with you all – that Hume City Council (Melbourne, Victoria – Australia) will be launching an Exhibition of a selection of my photographic works.  It’s a solo exhibition of archival limited-edition fine art pigment ink prints, featuring Victorian landscapes, seascapes, sunsets, sunrises, waterfalls, trees, animals, birds, and flowers as ‘photographic portraits of nature.


This exhibition was meant to have taken place a couple of years ago but due to COVID restrictions and usage of the Broadmeadows Town Hall as one of the COVID testing sites – it was postponed.  Lucky for me they still wanted to go ahead with the exhibition – and I am so grateful to Hume City Council for the opportunity.  Details in relation to said are below:

INTRODUCTION




Over the last month hubby and I revisited our local Woodlands.  Woodlands Historic Park, Greenvale, Victoria – Australia is a reserve we had frequently visited especially during COVID-19 lockdowns when travelling more than 5 kilometres from home wasn’t possible.  It has become a favourite place of ours now, not just for photography adventures but also for taking time out to enjoy its woodlands, kangaroos, and birdlife.

Different times of the year and different times of the day can present interesting photographic opportunities.  The sometimes scrubby woodlands offer natural habitats for varying types of wildlife.  It takes many visits to truly appreciate what this reserve has to offer.


The Eastern Grey Kangaroo can be seen frequently throughout the Woodlands.  Below are two images, one with a large male, and a female with a joey in her pouch.  The other was a very large male Kangaroo which some signs of an old injury on its hind leg.  It must be noted that caution should be taken around these animals and best not approached.  Respectfully viewed from a distance for the safety of both the animal and human advised.  Please note I took these photographs of the animals and birds with my long lens 150 to 600mm, so I was a long way from them.

Photographing birds can be challenging and at the same time a wonderful way of emerging oneself in the natural world.  Hubby helps to spot them for me so I can then concentrate on photographing them.  We make a good team.  He also helps lug around the photography equipment along with chairs, food, and other things of use – which makes for a great photography adventure.

INTRODUCTION




We decided to go back to re-photographing Williamstown, Victoria – an Australian city seaside location frequented by local residents and tourists alike.  Most of the images are taken around Ferguson Street Pier area looking across Port Phillip Bay. It was a beautiful sunny winter morning, and the light was kind for photography, and before the crowds arrived on location.


This was going to be my first tryout with a new lens Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 DiIII VXD for Sony FE Mount and paired up with my recently new Sony Camera Body A7RIV +A.  While the images were just about trying out this new combo – I was thrilled with the quality of the images and feel it’s been a great choice of systems for the type of photography I like to do.






The uploading of images onto social media can be a real challenge to showcase their quality.  Hopefully, these images will give some impression of how good the image quality is without viewing them first-hand via the computer and/or as a printed image. The above photograph and the following three images have been taken during this visit in June 2022, but I decided to include other images taken during previous years to help give a fuller story of this historic seaside location.

CONCLUSION


Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of well-being and at the same time – be creative. Being out and about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits is a real privilege for sure. It really does rejuvenate the body and soul.

INTRODUCTION


It’s been many months since my last blog.  With the onslaught of COVID and the changes in my daily life rhythms, I found it difficult to get back to this endeavour.  My photography adventures with my hubby and my daughter and granddaughter hadn’t waned though, we managed to still be inspired to get out and about in nature and look for interesting things to photograph.  I did manage to periodically update my Instagram account instagram.com/ido_karenrobinson and Facebook page facebook.com/karenrobinsonart if you would like to take a look.


Just this last weekend on Sunday 5th June 2022 hubby and I decided to take a drive to a new location for us called Sailors Falls, just off Ballan-Daylesford Road, Sailors Falls in Victoria – Australia.  It’s a short drive from home, an hour and 1/2 approximately, not taking into account our little stops on the way looking at nature.  It was a typical winter’s day in Victoria, cold and overcast but there wasn’t a strong wind which was good, and we had rugged up appropriately to ward off the chill of the weather.


The location proved to be a little gold mine for me as a photographer.  Because of recent heavy rainfalls, the falls themselves had a good flow of water falling over the rocky shelf.  During dryer months it would be unlikely to see this amount of water falling.  The falls’ base was surrounded by lush green vegetation – lovely huge ferns at its base and tall gum trees along the steep sides of the gouge.  Low lying bushes and vines helped to provide wonderful habitats for the local bird life. We sighted numerous small Ribbons and Fantails and could hear Kookaburras in the far distance.  The overcast sky ended up being a benefit to me while taking photographs of the falls.  The soft lighting helped to ensure I didn’t ‘blowout’ any of my image highlights thankfully!


Our time at the falls proved to be most enjoyable.  The weather was kind, and I was happy that I had the opportunity to photograph the falls at a perfect time of the year.  After spending time here, we headed into Daylesford for a pie and sauce for lunch and then back home.  Another lovely photography adventure with my hubby.

INTRODUCTION


The photography club I belong to asked its members to produce some images using the photographic technique of ‘Intentional Camera Movement‘ also known as ICM. In intentional camera movement, I am required to move the camera during its exposure in the hope of acquiring an image that appears creative or artistic in effect. It can take a bit of doing but is quite liberating as it frees you up to do something out of the norm for photography.


So this photography adventure took hubby and me to one of our coastal beaches in Melbourne, Victoria – Australia, the famous Brighton Beach.  On this part of the beach looking over Port Phillip Bay, famous colourful Bathing Boxes can be admired.  The sea was beautifully calm and the sky a pretty blue with dark clouds looming in the far distance.  I managed to create two ICM images – one of the Bathing Boxes and the other looking out over the ocean.  Fortunately, the beach wasn’t crowded and I was able to photograph this iconic location without having to dodge people on the beach or in the ocean.  A beautiful sunny day and a wonderful way to spent time at the seaside!

INTRODUCTION


Over a number of years now we have travelled around the regions of Strath Creek, Molesworth and Thornton, Victoria – Australia during our photography adventures.  Each time we discover new locations of interest or even revisit previous locations, but during a different time of the year.  It always amazes me how different regional Victoria can look from one season to the next. On this occasion we arrived at Murchison Gap Lookout at Strath Creek before sunrise which gave me an opportunity to photography some stunning images. As the sun crept over the Valley of a Thousand Hills, its golden warm rays created a beautiful soft other-world atmosphere. It was here I was able to capture the above image and the two below, at different moments during the early morning.


On our travels we sighted a small church named Christ Church erected about 1869 set aback from the Goulburn Valley Highway, Molesworth (image following below). It was a strange sight seeing this pristine small white and well cared for church against what felt like a rural setting. I was attracted to this composition because of the simplicity of the church itself, and how either side of it stood beautiful autumn trees. They were a wonderful contrast to the whiteness of the church.


At Thornton near Gilmores Bridge where Hubby fished along the Goulburn River, I sighted a scraggly autumn hedge and photographed (image at end of blog).  The day grew grey and I took the opportunity to rest in the car while hubby fished. We had gotten up very early that morning and I was feeling my age! I felt satisfied I had photographed what I wanted for the day.  Another wonderful opportunity to have been able to get out-and-about admiring Mother Nature handwork!

INTRODUCTION


Our photography adventure included a day trip around country Victoria (Australia) to the regions of Strath Creek, Kerrisdale, Yea and Goughs Bay. It’s still Autumn here, and the weather is mild and beautiful making it an enjoyable experience.  My photography goal was to seek out Autumn displays.  A stop at the Yea River Bridge in Yea revealed a magnificent autumn display riverside (image above and below).  The early afternoon sun shone through the oak tree leaves creating a wonder world of warm colours.  Pretty green ivy climbed the oak tree trunk and river reflections completed a glorious autumn image.  Along Broadford-Flowerdale Road Strath Creek a row of golden yellow leafed poplar trees stood tall against a mountain range and clear blue sky creating a truely lovely autumn portrait. A drive by the Kerrisdale Estate along Parrot Creek Road revealed again wonderful autumn displays.  Our last stop of the day was at Goughs Bay on Lake Eildon where we took in vast views of the bay from Bayside Boulevard.  The calm blue bay, orange rock foreground, distant green mountain range and clear blue sky during the mid afternoon sun was just magical, peaceful and a wonderful way to wind up our day’s photography adventure!  NB:  On another day we stopped at Marnong Estate Winery Mickleham where I managed to capture an image of the winery and distance fields and mountains showcasing glorious autumn colours (image at the bottom of this blog).

INTRODUCTION


A photography adventure to Mount Macedon, Victoria – Australia before the Autumn displays disappeared for another year was our next priority.  We encountered beautiful colourful gardens and streets featuring huge trees ladened with leaves ready to shed the last of their leaf coverage. We firstly visited the famous Honour Ave where Oak trees honours the 154 men and women of Macedon and Mount Macedon who enlisted during “The Great War” 1914-1918.  And then I found on Governors Road a property with a wonderful overgrown autumn boundary hedging display featuring a little gate and name plate titled ‘HADDON 26 – Governors Drive’.  Mount Macedon Road is the main road leading into the heart of the area where many beautiful gardens are on display for the general public to enjoy.  We discovered Devonshire Lane where I found a lush green and beautiful coloured vine draping over a fence.  My hubby found a lonely goat looking for company behind the hedge and spent some time there feeding and talking to the animal.  Our last stop on Taylors Road revealed an amazing display of Oak Trees!  Bright yellow, oranges, lush greens against grey ageing trunks made for some stunning images.  Our day in this region proved to be most fruitful photography wise and most enjoyable as well.
