INTRODUCTION

On our way back home from our recent Craigieburn Camera Club photography adventure visit to Studley Park – Kew, Victoria – Australia, we stopped off at one of the Flying-Fox Viewing Platforms alongside the Yarra River, Yarra Bank Park. Here I managed to photograph some of the roosting Grey Headed Flying-Foxes high up in river gums within their colonies. We spent some time at the platform waiting for better light and to spot moments where they stretched out their wings to let in the warm sunshine. It wasn’t until I got back home and took a close look at these photographs them that I realised just how beautiful Flying-Foxes are!

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography adventure – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS lens and a Sigma150-600mm F5-6.3 DGOS HSM with a Sigma Mount Converter MC-11. For some of these photographs, I used the camera hand-held but for most of the shots, I used a Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base. I had purchased a Right Angle L Plate Bracket for my camera so that I could turn it to do portraits or landscape photographs more easily which worked a treat.  I also purchased a BH-40 Ballhead for my tripod and once more, it made taking my photographs not just easier but much more enjoyable. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them, I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.   Please find both above and below, the best of what I took during this photography adventure!

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul.  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

INTRODUCTION

It took two separate visits to the Forest Glade Gardens for hubby and me to view the entire 6 hectares of this well known beautiful private garden. At this time of the year, Autumn, the gardens have grandiose leaf displays of yellows, oranges, reds, pinks backdropped against lush green lawns. There was lots of walking involved, up and down stairs throughout its four distinct garden themes:  large English section with huge exotic trees and ornamental plants, the Japanese garden, rolling green lawns, and the cool, shady fern gully.  We also sighted many garden statues, fountains, pergolas and ponds throughout the gardens which gave us an opportunity to stop, catch our breath, take some photographs and just enjoy our surroundings.  On both photography adventure occasions we left feeling most tired but happy we took the time to visit these beautiful and unique gardens.

INTRODUCTION

It was a true privilege to join some of my fellow Craigieburn Camera Club Members at this year’s Craigieburn ANZAC Ceremony at the Craigieburn Garden of Remembrance.  We were invited by Kevin O’Callaghan (President of the Craigieburn War Memorial & Remembrance Committee Inc) to take photographs of the event for their members and families. The early morning was beautiful for an Autumn day, no rain or wind which meant we could all stand outdoors without fear of bad weather.  The mood of the crowd respectful and serious as they took time to remember those who served in the defence of their country.  As I developed this range of photographs, I took note of the solemn looks on the faces of some of the men and women who proudly wore war medals of great merit.  And others huddled in small groups to share the company of those who understood, understood what it meant to go to war, to come home again, to leave behind so many – to remember…

INTRODUCTION

Autumn time has arrived in our part of the world Victoria, Australia where deciduous trees lose their colourful display of leaves.  Therefore – time again for hubby and me to revisit the Mount Macedon region which is renowned for its beautiful gardens, especially at this time of the year. This photography adventure involved visiting Duneira Heritage Garden located not far from the Major Mitchell Lookout.  At the lookout, we experienced a stunning view that encompassed a rocky foreground, tall lanky gum trees saddled each side of the view leading down towards far distant farming properties. And completing this stunning picture, a pretty blue sky dotted with white fluffy clouds!  At Duneira Heritage Gardens we discovered 16 acres of garden that showcased “a staggering variety of exotic trees and shrubs”.  At the completion of our wanderings, we stopped for a coffee and seated ourselves on one of the wooden garden benches overlooking expanses of green lawn dwarfed by ancient trees.  Another photography adventure achieved and once more ticking the happy box

INTRODUCTION

We hadn’t been to the seaside for some time and due to the fact that country Victoria has been very dry this summer, a return to the beach and ocean scene seemed a good idea.  So this photography adventure’s chosen location was Barwon Heads (Victoria – Australia); a popular seaside resort for family holidaymakers and, an old favourite of ours going back many years when our children were little. It was an early rise for hubby and me on this day – so we could catch the sunrise at Barwon Heads, and we were not disappointed. It was glorious!  We also took the time to revisit Thirteenth Beach where magnificent views of the coastal sandy beach and ocean coastline could be seen. At the mouth of the Barwon River, watercraft travelled amongst paddle boarders enjoying the beginning of a beautiful weekend day.  The Barwon River Bridge offered interesting architectural visions with locals fishing and playing near it on the river’s edge.  During our walk back towards our parked car through the Barwon Caravan Park, flowering gum trees attracted local bird life looking for a feed such as the Red Wattle Bird and Rainbow Lorikeets. Before the crowds came, we left this location and headed back home feeling refreshed and glad we made the effort to revisit this lovely family holiday retreat…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting, once again The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia.  But on this occasion it was with the Craigieburn Camera Club Members on a club field trip. I decided to direct my efforts on photographing the Birds within the Great Walk-through Flight Aviary!  Here I was able to photograph brightly coloured male and female Eclectus Parrots, lanky Black-necked Storks, an elegant Cattle Egret, Little Pied Cormorant, amazingly coloured Glossy Ibis, Pied Imperial Pigeon, White-faced Heron, Pied Heron, quirky-looking Royal Spoonbill and elegant swimming Black Swans.  It was an exceptionally beautiful day with the sun shining in the morning thus allowing for some good lighting for photography; especially within the Aviary as it can be quiet dark and difficult to get enough light for good photography.  I did have a problem with my ISO being too high for some of the photographs so it will be something I will need to work on in future when doing bird photography.  After our individual photography task, we rejoined the Craigieburn Camera Club members back at the Zoo Entrance Coffee Shop.  Here we debriefed about our morning’s photography experience. Hubby and I had a lovely time and left feeling blessed to be able to do these types of photography adventures with like-minded people…

INTRODUCTION

Early one morning, hubby and I decided to take a drive to Spavin Drive Lake in Sunbury, Victoria – Australia.  A location that is not too far from home and an easy drive for us as well.  Here we spent a couple of hours photographing local bird wildlife while enjoying the early morning sunshine.  Spavin Drive Lake was originally made to provide water to the historic Rupertswood Mansion.  Now it’s a diverse habitat for varying water birds and a popular fishing spot for local residents. I was able to photograph Greylag Geese, Pacific Black Ducks, Australian White Ibis, Crested Pigeons, Common Indian Miners, Eurasian Coots, Orange-bellied Parrots, and Yellow Throated Miners while feeding their babies.  It was a pleasant morning’s photography adventure and at its end, we only had a short drive back home – good for us oldies!

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting, once again The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia. I decided to direct my efforts on photographing the Ring-tailed and the Black and White Ruffed Lemurs! We were lucky on this day as the temperature was just right for these delightful creatures.  They were out-and-about socializing, sunbathing together and relaxing in yoga-like positions, and spent a lot of time grooming each other.  “Unfortunately, habitat destruction from farming and logging has caused the Lemur to be listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List (Zoos Victoria 2019).  It was saddening to realise this fact and it made our experience studying and photographing them even more meaningful and special…

INTRODUCTION

Another photography adventure day with the Craigieburn Camera Club!  Hubby and I with other club members went about fulfilling the required photography task which was to find a composition to photograph that was inclusive of the following: music, reflections, people, angles and movement.  Federation Square, Melbourne – Australia was the Club’s choice of locations. Due to the fact it was a weekend and lots of community events where underway while we were there – it wasn’t hard to find things to photograph, but being creative demanded extra attention from us as photographers.  It was also hot which made it even more challenging!  But our afternoon finished up with us all joining up together to have dinner at one of Federation Square’s Cafes.  Here we got to cool down with a much-needed cold drink, exchange stories about our experiences during the afternoon and just enjoy each others company.  It was a great way to end the day…

INTRODUCTION

Hubby and I decided to spend another photography adventure at The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia. I decided to direct my efforts towards photographing the native Australian tropical and subtropical butterflies situated within the zoo’s renowned Butterfly House!  I wasn’t sure what to expect and how I was going to set about taking photographs, but we have learnt through other photography adventures that taking one’s time is important.  To stop and observe, take-in the ambience and really look.  These delicate, colourful and beautiful winged creatures danced and fluttered throughout the glasshouse allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities.  While photographing them I thought about how their life span is so short with some living only one day, others around two weeks and some species living up to nine months.  Their life cycle starts with the adult butterfly mating, the female laying eggs, the eggs hatch and the life cycle starts over once more. Photographing them close up truly allowed for us to appreciate their beauty and the importance of their presence in our earthly world.

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting, once again The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia. I decided to direct my efforts on photographing the Western Lowland Gorillas! They are classed as ‘critically endangered’ as their numbers are falling in the wild due to habitat loss caused by mining, logging and the illegal bush meat trade.  It took two separate visits to the zoo for me to be able to photograph these engaging creatures.  As we waited, watched and studied them it became evident just how much we and these animals have in common.  Their facial expressions, body language and moodiness all too familiar to us as humans.  We enjoyed our time with them and so appreciative of being able to see them close-up, but saddened at the same time to see them enclosed and without freedom.

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia for the 4th time. I decided to direct my efforts on photographing the Sumatran Tiger! They are classed as ‘critically endangered’ as their numbers in the wild are dwindling on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.  We spent a number of hours observing and photographing this beautifully marked animal while it paced within its enclosure.  There was something sad about the way it constantly walked the same path over and over again.  While I understand and appreciated that these animals receive the best of care and treatment, and the importance of Zoos helping to prevent the extinction of these animals, it still had me feeling poorly for the animal.  It was a very warm day and we were lucky enough to see the tiger take a swim in its small lagoon.  Many people came and went to see the tiger during the time we were there which was good – but I found myself wishing they stayed longer to truly appreciate the importance of acknowledging the tiger’s existence…

During our stay at my hubby’s brother’s place in Bruthen, Victoria – Australia, we decided one morning to get up early and take a 4 wheel-drive into a nearby State Forest to an area called Deptford. The historical Deptford Township – which in 1866 consisted of a hotel, post office, general store, school, blacksmith’s shop, chemist and bakery, now only feature historical remains; and one being the ‘Baker’s Oven‘ which I photographed and is featured below.  Our photography adventure had us follow the bush walking track alongside the Nicholson River.  It winds its way through some of Victoria’s most beautiful natural bush vegetation.  Nicholson River was an early gold mining site back in 1852. The now bush walking track named Slaughter Track was originally used by drovers moving cattle up the river to waterholes.  It was also used as a goods route taking vegetables to settlements; and local Deptford children used it to walk to school.  As we wandered along the track, I stopped to take photographs and as I did, I couldn’t help feel the magic of this forest.  Birds called from high up in spindly Australian gum trees, the bush crackled as the day warmed up, and the Nicholson River with its fresh water meandering through thick vegetation – offered a much-needed cooling retreat for holiday makers.  My hubby enjoyed his one-on-one time with his brother. I enjoyed seeing them together being able to catch-up and share precious time. It was a good day that ended up with joining my hubby’s family members at a campsite alongside of the river. Here we got to watch the children engage in water-play to help them cool down during the hottest part of the day.  It was a great way to complete our small holiday break, we were thankful for the opportunity!

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia for the third time. It is just a short distance from where we live and provides some good photographic opportunities. I decided to direct my efforts on photographing the Sumatran Orang-utans!  Zoos Victoria state that “while this peaceable family group lives in safety at the Melbourne Zoo, Sumatran Orang-utans in the wild are under great threat.  They are classed as critically endangered, with numbers in the wild rapidly falling. Numbers have dropped by close to 95% in the last 100 years and there may now be fewer than 3500 in the wild. Their rainforest habitat is being rapidly destroyed to make way for logging and agriculture, particularly palm oil plantations. They are also hunted for the pet trade and for meat” (Zoos Victoria 2019). Our time there while I photographed these kindly and beautiful Orang-utans had me appreciate their place in the world.  We felt sadden by the fact that they were caged, that their existence is being threatened by us – humankind. But hopefully greater awareness of their plight will ensure that they are here in the wild for future generations of us to respect and appreciate. And to know and understand that we all play an important part on this blue planet of ours…

INTRODUCTION

During our stay at my hubby’s brother’s place in Bruthen, Victoria – Australia, we decided to get up early and take a drive along the picturesque Wards Road. It winds its way though beautiful green local farming properties that have views that stretch for miles.  Despite the fact the morning was overcast, we found the temperature just right for this time of the year! Cool for a summer morning and perfect for enjoying such a treasure trove of quietness, fresh air and remoteness.  While we were there, we spotted some wild emus strolling across a grass field where they had been drinking from a watering hole.  They were then heading back towards thick bush up alongside of the property.  The photographs I took of them are not the best, but felt it important to include as we don’t get to see them very often.  This photography adventure lifted our spirits and had us feeling good for the rest of the day!

INTRODUCTION

On this photography adventure day, we only had to take a 5 minute drive from home!  Beside one of Westmeadows, Victoria – Australia local backstreets there stands a tall old gumtree with a large hollow.  At this location each year, around November, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos come and nest at what is perhaps an unusual location.  Cars and people busily pass by daily under their nest, but they seem to have adapted to the suburban lifestyle.  I cannot help feel sad for our bird wildlife.  Melbourne’s ever emerging urban sprawl means that tree felling of large areas of land is therefore – stripping large areas of bird habitats.  Thus leaving birds to find unusual locations to subsist or not at all – hence bird numbers dwindling.  So I hope in years to come to continue to find these iconic Australian native birds revisit this old gum tree…

INTRODUCTION

We decided for this photography adventure that we should visit my hubby’s brother who lives in Bruthen – a small township near Lakes Entrance, Victoria – Australia.  On our way there, we made a slight detour to visit the Lakes Entrance area, a seaside location occupied at this time of the year with many holiday makers! The weather on our arrival was generally overcast but still pleasant.  It was difficult to photograph scenes I wanted, and I realised that aerial shots would be best, so we went to a couple of lookouts to help capture some overview shots of Lakes Entrance.  On distance sandy islands and dunes, Little Black Cormorants, Pied Cormorants and Australian pelicans flocked in abundance, far enough away from human contact, and too far for me to photograph close-up with my existing camera equipment.  Numerous small and medium-sized pleasure water-crafts zoomed throughout the waterways, while shoreline tourists spent time sightseeing.  My hubby spent a little time fishing to-no-avail but he enjoyed the process despite this fact.  It was easy to see why water-loving families migrated here for the holiday season, especially if they had access to a boat!

INTRODUCTION

Our photography adventure on this day had us travelling to just outside the township of East Warburton, Victoria – Australia, visiting the mysterious and spectacular Redwood Forest.  The forest’s exotic Californian Redwoods being the tallest tree species in the world, planted by the Board of Works around 1930 means they are now nearing a century of growth.  There are over 1476 trees ranging from 20 metres to the tallest being 55 metres. During our stroll through these magnificent trees, we felt dwarfed by their sheer height!  Because we came on a clear sunny day, and around mid-morning, the sunlight was gently filtering through the tree tops thus allowing for perfect photography conditions. Towards the end of the plantation, we discovered walking trails that took us to Cement Creek East Branch.  Here we found the fresh water creek babbling through lush green vegetation where numerous well established Lacey Tree-ferns stood like elegant umbrellas. Their large leaf canopies filtered warm yellow sunlight onto small green ground level ferns.  Further in from the creek’s edge, lanky tall gum trees housed noisy native birds. Finding this magical environment alongside of the Redwood Forest was truly a bonus, and unexpected. We enjoyed our discovery of this location and the time we spent there…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia for the second time this month. I decided to direct my efforts on photographing the Asian Elephants! These gentle giant mammals gracefully drift to-and-fro throughout their home – “the award-winning Trail of the Elephants which allows the elephants considerable scope to roam and forage: it is estimated they travel as far (or further) than elephants living in natural non-extreme environments (6.21–15.00km/day vs. 5–10 km/day)” (Zoos Victoria). The decision to restrict myself to just photographing this mammal gave me the opportunity to better capture their features — their essence I feel. We enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning soon…

Above Photograph Story:  During my time photographing the Giraffes – I noticed this one staring into the far distance.  It had stepped up into a patch of dirt surrounded by large rocks positioned as the highest point within its territory. From here it craned its neck towards the view.  I couldn’t help ponder “what must it be thinking?”.  This elegant Giraffe appeared forlorn as it studied the far distant terrain over tall green tree tops and towards the clouded blue skies’.  As I stood there observing, I suddenly found myself feeling sad for this beautiful long-legged, long-necked creature…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure involved hubby and I visiting The Royal Melbourne Zoo Parkville, Victoria – Australia.  It had been decades since our last visit and probably with our own children when they where small. We spent a morning there with the intention of returning many more times during 2019.  I decided to concentrate my photography efforts on just the Giraffes.  As the Zebras lived with the Giraffes they too were photographed.  I also managed to photograph some noisy colourful Rainbow Lorikeets while they feed at the Zoo’s bird feeders, and a Bell Miner more commonly know as Bellbird because of their beautiful call.  Making the decision to restrict myself to just a couple of zoo animals and birds gave me the opportunity to better capture their features — their essence I feel.  We enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning soon…
