INTRODUCTION

We decided for this photography adventure that we should visit my hubby’s brother who lives in Bruthen – a small township near Lakes Entrance, Victoria – Australia.  On our way there, we made a slight detour to visit the Lakes Entrance area, a seaside location occupied at this time of the year with many holiday makers! The weather on our arrival was generally overcast but still pleasant.  It was difficult to photograph scenes I wanted, and I realised that aerial shots would be best, so we went to a couple of lookouts to help capture some overview shots of Lakes Entrance.  On distance sandy islands and dunes, Little Black Cormorants, Pied Cormorants and Australian pelicans flocked in abundance, far enough away from human contact, and too far for me to photograph close-up with my existing camera equipment.  Numerous small and medium-sized pleasure water-crafts zoomed throughout the waterways, while shoreline tourists spent time sightseeing.  My hubby spent a little time fishing to-no-avail but he enjoyed the process despite this fact.  It was easy to see why water-loving families migrated here for the holiday season, especially if they had access to a boat!

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens, and a Sigma150-600mm F5-6.3 DGOS HSM with a Sigma Mount Converter MC-11. For some of these photographs I used the camera hand-held but for most of the shots, I used a Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with quick release base. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS

On my return home, I downloaded all the photographs into Adobe Lightroom Classic CC.  I developed a small selection of photographs During the process of developing them I was able to see what I needed to address during my next photographic adventure.   Please find both above and below, the best of what I took during this photography adventure!

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world and the creatures it inhabits – really does rejuvenate the body and soul.  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative!

INTRODUCTION

Our photography adventure on this day had us travelling to just outside the township of East Warburton, Victoria – Australia, visiting the mysterious and spectacular Redwood Forest.  The forest’s exotic Californian Redwoods being the tallest tree species in the world, planted by the Board of Works around 1930 means they are now nearing a century of growth.  There are over 1476 trees ranging from 20 metres to the tallest being 55 metres. During our stroll through these magnificent trees, we felt dwarfed by their sheer height!  Because we came on a clear sunny day, and around mid-morning, the sunlight was gently filtering through the tree tops thus allowing for perfect photography conditions. Towards the end of the plantation, we discovered walking trails that took us to Cement Creek East Branch.  Here we found the fresh water creek babbling through lush green vegetation where numerous well established Lacey Tree-ferns stood like elegant umbrellas. Their large leaf canopies filtered warm yellow sunlight onto small green ground level ferns.  Further in from the creek’s edge, lanky tall gum trees housed noisy native birds. Finding this magical environment alongside of the Redwood Forest was truly a bonus, and unexpected. We enjoyed our discovery of this location and the time we spent there…

INTRODUCTION

The last day of September on a beautiful spring day, hubby and I decided to take a drive through the Yarra Glen Region, Victoria – Australia for our next landscape photography adventure. At this time of the year, the valleys and hillsides are lush green and unlike during summer time where they will turn golden brown due to the hot dry weather conditions.  Vineyards feature widely throughout the region standing alongside of pastures where we found cattle happily grazing under the warm spring sunshine.  While we were there, dark ominous clouds progressively gathered up along the far distant mountain ranges as the day drifted towards its end.  We also discovered less travelled local roads where we found impressive panoramic views that had us gazing in awe at nature’s beauty!

INTRODUCTION

This was my hubby and my first visit to Healesville Sanctuary (Zoos Victoria) for many years.  It is located at Healesville in rural Victoria, Australia. The zoo specialises in the breeding of native Australian animals. On this beautiful spring day – we managed to cover just part of the sanctuary with the intention to revisit again at a later date to photograph other animals and birds not covered at this particular visit. Photographing these beautiful and curious creatures was certainly a challenge for me!

INTRODUCTION

A lovely spring-day drive in the countryside around the region of Nulla Vale, Victoria – Australia.  Tall Black Wattle trees featuring small yellow pom-pom like flowers adorned the green rolling hillsides.  Mounds of huge granite boulders lay scattered about forming natural landscape sculptures – their presence demanding our attention!  Other views revealed lush green pastures where sheep and cattle stood contentedly grazing away their day.  Towards the end of our drive, we took the road that travelled alongside of Langley Nature Conservation Reserve.  One side of the road we sighted bush vegetation as it must have been before farmers developed this region.  On the other side of the road, we experienced beautiful views stretching across green pastures, dotted with sheep and cattle with far distance mountains and cloudy skies completing the picture!  As we drove deeper into the reserve, we came across a small pocket of green pasture which revealed a mob of Kangaroos busily grazing. They seemed mostly un-bothered by our presence which suggested they don’t see people here very often within this part of the reserve.  Photography adventure complete we drove back home. Once again, our time with nature left us feeling refreshed and ready to embark on life’s daily challenges.  We can’t wait until the next photography adventure

INTRODUCTION

A beautiful winter’s photography adventure day walking around the Kinglake National Park at Masons Falls, Kinglake West, Victoria – Australia!  I had the wonderful opportunity to also enjoy the company of my daughter, granddaughter and husband.  During our time here, we did the walk to the falls where from a large viewing platform, we were able to take a number of photographs.  It was difficult to obtain varying shots with trees obscuring the overall view of the falls but it was a very beautiful outlook.  Along the walk we found tall Black Wattle trees showing off their beautiful pom-pom like flowers.  My daughter and I also managed to photograph Superb Fairy-Wren that were easily found hopping amongst the ground vegetation within the picnic area but not so easy to photograph as they move very quickly.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this landscape photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For these photographs I used the camera both hand-held and on the tripod with a remote control. I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

The above photograph on the right features my daughter holding her Sony A7II camera with a lens – Sigma 150-600 contemporary suitable for capturing photographs of birds.  Here we found small Splendid Fairy-Wrens hopping around looking for morsels of food visiting tourists had left behind after their visit to the Masons Falls.  Below here is a lovely photograph of a female Superb Fairy-Wren which she managed to achieve. It has to be noted I wasn’t able to achieve the same result and my dear daughter has allowed me to show her photograph.  These little creatures were just too fast for me!

INTRODUCTION

Some days are just best to stay indoors and Sunday 19thAugust was one of those days, especially if you are a keen photographer! We took a short morning drive on this day to see if there were any good landscape spots to photograph. Unfortunately, the predicted looming bad weather followed us and eventually after some hail, snow and rainfall, we decided to head back home and do our photography adventure – on a better day. I did manage to capture this photograph though (featured above) at a spot in Baynton, a small rural community, central Victoria – Australia and near the Bourke and Wills track.  Here, the sheep had made their way up towards the top of the hill, after they had spotted our car pull-up beside their lush green grazing pasture.  I managed to take this photograph seated within the car, through the passenger’s window as the weather conditions were just too dismal to be standing out in the elements!

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this landscape photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For this photograph – I used the camera hand-held as I took it from inside our car through the open car window.  I also used my Apple iPhone 8 Plus mobile phone for quick spontaneous photographs and gain GPS location readings.

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure back in May this year involved visiting the Docklands Waterfront, city of Melbourne, Victoria – Australia with the Craigieburn Camera Club. Our goal was to gain a better understanding and experience of night photography.  It was a lovely evening, not too cold and a sprinkle of rain had wet the pavement surfaces just enough to help reflect colourful neon lighting which shone from surrounding city buildings.  Strolling through the city’s water’s edge during the night in a group felt most safe, and such a pleasure to be able to take night photographs without worrying about our safety…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure came out of a need for my dear hubby to get-out-of-the-house after spending almost four weeks bedridden due to a back injury.  Now on the mend, he felt a desperate need to take a drive into the bush to do some forest bathing. As I had been his carer over this period of time, I too felt the same need!  We decided to visit a region we had driven through before, but hadn’t stopped at called Mount Alexander Regional Park at Faraday, Victoria – Australia.  Here we travelled to three locations, one called Dog Rocks and the other two – old historical Granite Quarries.

At Dog Rocks, which is a short stroll off Joseph Young Drive, we discovered a conglomeration of ginormous granite rocks.  Dog Rocks was named as such back in 1846 by the manager of Lockhart Morton of Sutton Grange Station as many dingoes were seen around the rocks during that period of time. Dog Rocks is a very picturesque location with native gum trees growing in mangled formations around these huge boulders.  The late morning sunshine dappling its way through the bush helped make for interesting photographic opportunities.  But the gale force winds presented me with a photographic challenge – that being to ensure my photographs didn’t experience any motion blur; with a high shutter speed and high ISO’s, mission accomplished! Small pockets of openings through the bush revealed expansive views of Harcourt farmlands which looked particularly green due to winter rains. We spent some time here photographing and just simply enjoying the beautiful, scenic surroundings.

After leaving Dog Rocks, we drove a little further along and discovered another track leading off Joseph Young Drive which lead up to a historical granite quarry.  Bathing in the late morning sun, we found monstrously huge chucks of granite, stacked around a large-scale quarry piece of machinery.  Opposite the quarry site we found an area where stunning panoramic views looking out across towards Harcourt could be easily photographed. After our departure from this location we spotted another track which lead us to the opposite side of the mountain.  Here we found a smaller granite quarry and once more panoramic views looking out across towards Sutton Grange.

INTRODUCTION

This particular photography adventure, back in July 2018, had us driving along the Mr Tarrengower Road heading up towards Mount Tarrengower Lookout, Maldon – Victoria (Australia).  We stopped alongside of the road to take in panoramic views stretching across out over towards the farming plains of Tarrengower.  The day was wildly windy where the weather one moment was sunny and the next thunderous clouds possessed the wide-open skies.  Standing overlooking this vast area helped us appreciate once more, the stunning beauty of this region, especially during this time of the year where the land is green from winter rains.

INTRODUCTION

This particular photography adventure, back in June 2018, was more about spending time with my daughter, baby granddaughter and hubby on one of Victoria’s beautiful sunny winter days. As we travelled along the Northwood Road which winds alongside of the Goulburn River, Seymour, Victoria – Australia, we came across the historical Old Goulburn River Bridge. From 1853 to 1966 it was an important river crossing, but now stands as an impressive monument of its time! This elegant wooden structure today nestles quietly in amongst native Australian bush. Beautiful river reflections help show-off its well-preserved 19th century construction of rolled steel joists, transversely and longitudinally planked grey box timber deck supported on cross-beams (Heritage Council 2006). We had a lovely time together enjoying the beauty of the Goulburn River.

INTRODUCTION

Driving back home from Maldon some weeks ago, hubby and I stopped at Porcupine Flat Dredge and Dragline Historical Site, Victoria – Australia. It was once a flourishing area of the Maldon goldfields. Here we viewed two huge pieces of gold mining equipment – dredge and dragline. The dredge allowed for more large-scale gold mining than was used back in the 1850’s. In 1958 dredge operations were developed and then shut down in 1984 after moderate success. On this particular afternoon, the sun came out after a rainy morning and the natural filtered sunlight bathed the surrounding Australian bush in a golden warm light.  It was perfect for taking photographs of these monster machines!  I was also able to capture a beautiful reflection of the trees in the pond where one of these huge pieces of machinery lay decaying with rust, a ghostly reminder of years long gone…

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure day didn’t quite turn out as we had hoped.  The plan was to travel to the region of Cathedral Range State Park (Taggety, Victoria – Australia} and do a number of walks, take great photos and then go home satisfied. The Cathedral Range is a spectacular seven kilometre ridge of sharply upturned sedimentary rock. Well, we were a little ambitious – to say the least!  We knew the walks could be challenging, and especially for our age being that we are in our mid-sixties.  But somehow, in our minds, we thought we would be able to managed the walks and climbs at this location.  On our arrival early morning, and upon reading the signage about the said walks and trails, we came to realise that we were not ‘experienced advanced climbers’!  So no walking the trails for us and travelling along the dirt road, in the car, became the limit for us on this particular day.  I had to contend myself with just being able to take photographs of small portions of the region from the roadside instead of panorama versions others have been able to achieve.  Oh the joys of getting older! My hubby did get some fishing in at Thornton Goulburn River which made him happy.  And we drove through Molesworth, Buxton and the Highlands on our way back home which proved to be a very nice drive, also captured some worthy photographs as we went.  But it wasn’t our best photography adventure day, still we got out-and-about and that is always very good…

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT USED

During this landscape photography exercise – I used a compact system camera, a Sony A7 Mark II – Full Frame with a Sony A FE24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens. For most of these photographs I used the camera mounted on a tripod with a remote timer and for some, I handheld the camera, ensuring I had engaged the camera’s stabiliser.

CONCLUSION

Being out-and-about experiencing the natural wonders of the world really does rejuvenate the body and soul.  Photography is just another way to improve one’s sense of wellbeing and at the same time – be creative.

Happy photography all!

INTRODUCTION

This photography adventure day involved my hubby and I joining the Craigieburn Camera Club on a lovely day trip to the historic Tahbilk Winery and Wetlands, Tabilk, Victoria – Australia. Its name Tabilk-tabilk ‘place of many waterholes’ in the language of the Daung-wurrung clans, the first people of Australia, is a historic family owned winery with the property consisting of 1,214 hectares of rich river flats and a frontage of 11kms to the Goulburn River and 8kms of permanent backwaters and creeks (Tahbilk 2018).  We managed to walk some of the Tahbilk Eco Trails visiting Landing 1 and 2 with a crossover on the Long Bridge which was ‘built from timer hewn on the Estate to replace a ford on the site soon after the Goulburn Weir was completed in 1889.  In 1996 it was completely rebuilt, again with time cut and milled on the property’ (Tahbilk 2018).  One of the areas I found great to photograph was inside the Tahbilk underground cellars. Following the stairs down into the original underground cellars built-in 1862 felt like stepping back in time!  Despite the greyness of the skies, I was able to take a range of good scenic photographs which made me happy…

INTRODUCTION

Hubby and I – for this photography adventure, travelled up to Mount Wombat Lookout, Strathbogie, Victoria – Australia. I wanted to capture the sunrise as it came up and over the mountain range.  Mount Wombat Lookout is situated on a mountain plateau which offers 360 degree views of breathtaking landscape – a photographers dream! On our way back home, I was also able to capture some beautiful shots which took in the views around the ‘Kevin View’ farming region and of a small lake in Euroa.  Early morning is such a beautiful time of the day, and watching it unfold and seeing the light change as the morning processes – just magical!

My favourite photograph of the trip is this particular one featured here below.  Taken from the very top of Mount Wombat, looking out above natural Australian bush, towards the mountain ranges and directly into the sun – made for a magical photograph.

The photograph featured here below didn’t work well in colour, so I decided to see if it worked better as a black and white photograph.  I was pleased with the results, especially after using Adobe Lightroom Classic CC’s ‘dehaze’ tool within the ‘Develop’ module.  It gave the image a soft magical look which I like.  The towers, wire fencing, the shed and tubing on the ground where my hubby is standing, gives the image an industrial feel. Interesting, when taking into account, it is situated at the very top of Mount Wombat which has 360 degree landscape views of the Strathbogie region.

INTRODUCTION

On this particular photography adventure day, the skies became engulfed in grey sultry clouds, with the sun making spasmodic appearances! The panoramic views from the coastline at the seaside town of Kilcunda, Victoria – Australia looked out over the Bass Coast Ocean.  Here surging surf rolled over near deserted sandy beaches.  I managed to also capture some photographs of the Kilcunda Trestle Bridge. This iconic heritage-listed structure was constructed in 1911.  It stretches 91 metres across the Bourne Creek and is 12 metres high, making it a must see when visiting this region of Victoria.  While I was worried that the weather conditions wouldn’t allow for some good photography, I was happy with these taken on the day.  The photograph below featuring an expansive view of the Bass Coast Ocean coastline – is my favourite.  In the far distance, thunderous clouds loom, yet in the foreground, the sun shines brightly over the whites of relentless incoming surf.  On the sandy golden beach, two people stand peering out across the ocean.  It almost looks like a painting to me…

INTRODUCTION

Capturing a sunrise can be an interesting photography adventure! I managed to photograph this beautiful sunrise from a ridge located near McDonalds Track, Lang Lang, Victoria – Australia.  My hubby and I, were at the time, getting concerned that we were going to miss it, and searched the region desperately to find a location where access and position was just right. We finally found this spot just as the sun was rising. Hubby surveyed the area ahead and found a suitable place to set up the tripod, all that was needed was me with my camera. But it required me and hubby to climb a steep embankment. I know, you are all saying right now, don’t do it, it’s not worth the risk, but all thoughts of our personal safety were gone from our minds as we pursued our thoughts of capturing the glorious morning sun. So – as I was climbing the steep embankment and as my hubby was helping me, he lost his footing and fell from the near top directly backwards, landing like a turtle with head, arms, legs in the air and then rolled down the rest of the embankment. Upon reaching the bottom, he just bounced back up declaring that he was OK! We then spent moments capturing this beautiful sunrise while hubby’s back proceeded to swell. By the time we got back to the car hubby declared that he thought he needed to go home and on our way stop off at the Hospital Emergency Department.  I took a look at his lower back that by then, had ballooned to a large melon – off to emergency we went where hubby was in great pain by then, as the swelling cramped his lower back function. After spending so hours there and after a series of scans, hubby was cleared of any back damage other than severe back muscle trauma. As the days moved on, his back began to feature what was a very impressive, and very large bruised lower back which is still persisting and will take weeks to subside for sure. Upon developing these photographs in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC some days later and after showing hubby the results, my darling dear husband declared “well it was all worth it then”. I laughed and said “no it wasn’t worth him being hurt”. The lesson learned, was that we need to be more careful, remember that we are no longer young! And this has also been reinforced by our daughter – who was horrified when she sighted her dad’s back bruising. Photography adventure for sure – but not to be repeated…safety first!

INTRODUCTION

On our way to photograph Paradise Falls located within the region of Cheshunt, Victoria – Australia, we drove along a gravel road which featured a stunning view of Mt Bulla, far in the distant skyline.  Upon stopping to take a photograph, a beautiful black cow with a hide that glistened in the bright sunlight, standing alone, became very curious as to why we were there!  We took time here to enjoy the expansive views of the grazing field and mountain ranges while at the same time, stretched our old legs!  We then continued on with our drive to find Paradise Falls.  After parking the car, we then engaged in a lengthy walk along a man-made dirt path that showcased some magnificent landscape views.  Upon reaching our destination we discovered a fall with no water running over-and-down the rocks, which was disappointing.  Being the peak of summer in Victoria, we both noted that we would need to revisit during winter-time, where winter rains would ensure we had the opportunity to sight a curtain waterfall.  It was still a very beautiful location, which featured stunning red rock formations and native wildlife that could be seen, and heard, close by and afar, due to the isolation of the region.  We enjoyed not only the opportunity take photographs, but also enjoyed the sights and sounds that the Australian bush can offer…

INTRODUCTION

The King Valley is a very scenic region of Victoria – Australia with this part featuring expansive cattle grazing fields.  Australian bush covered mountain ranges in the background aid as, a constant reminder, that in previous times, these lands would have been covered in dense bush.  Being mid-summer now, the day was as expected, hot and dry.  Scattered across the landscape, stood, a number of magnificent old gum trees.  During the hottest part of the day, their shade offers refuge to nearby cattle. These old masters of the land, also offer important places, for the local bird wildlife to congregate.  The calls of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos can be heard from afar, which demand the attention of anyone in hearing range. While this is a beautiful countryside, I couldn’t help feeling a little sad. Before generations of settlers came, and cut down all the native trees to make way for cattle farming, the area would have been densely covered in native Australia bush, as the mountains behind in these photographs reveal.  I only hope that my children’s children, will have the same opportunities I have had, in being able to see these lands before their existence gives way, to our ever demanding needs…

INTRODUCTION

We arrived here at the picturesque William Hovell Lake during the mid-afternoon, on a weekday.  There was no-one to be seen on this hot summer’s day!  The Lake itself, is located at the edge of the Alpine National Forest.  It is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with a ‘flip bucket chute spillway’ across the King River, which flows in and out of the dam itself.  It supplies water for irrigated crops, vineyards and grazing properties along the King River.  Fortunate for us, we had come at a time of the year where the dam was relatively full and looking its wonderest best.  A truly beautiful location that well showcases the lake nettled in amongst mountain bushland which forms part of the Great Dividing Range. It is easy here to feel small and insignificant while gazing at these majestic surroundings. It’s a positive feeling though where ones troubles just disappear momentarily, uplifting our spirits as we marvel at the wonders of mankind and mother nature’s endeavours.
